Help Backup

Can anyone recommend a way of backing up the settings on my phone (preferably to a file or files and not via google)?
Kies never works for this and MyBackup also always comes up with an error message saying it cannot contact it's servers.
Thanks.

Well without a rooted phone you cant backup much.
All backup program need root access to be able to make the backup,
Without the root they dont even see the system files.

Kies is supposed to backup only it doesn't work for me. How does this handle the phone not being "rooted"? It seems strange there is no viable backup solution for a standard device.

Sure kies do some backup and google do some, but a full backup you cant do with them.
Its how android is and it will not change.
So rooting the phone is still the only way to do it.
I have a hard time to accept that a phone/software company shall decide what I want to do with my phone.
Its like you buy a computer and you can only use the D drive.

I'm not asking how to do a full backup. I just want to back up settings, text messages, contacts, like Kies should do but won't.

First you should use google to backup contact.
Also there is app that do backup on those things, but they still need root to work.
With titanium backup you can make a backup on all things you want.
Try to understand without root access you are very limited on what you can do.
And if you dont use root then you are stuck with kies.
But kies do work, but can be a pain in the ass to get it to work.
