If you buy a 4G LTE phone...can you run it on a 4G or 3G network? For whatever the reason (bad 4G LTE service, traveling using your world phone...etc.).

As long as the phone has 4g and 3g radios. My phone has LTE and CDMA so I can turn off the LTE radio if I dont want to use it and just use CDMA.

Ok thanks. Was looking at t he Samsung Galaxy S2 (or S3...when it is released) and the Samsung Note. Will see what "radios" they have.

I don't think there are any phones currently that are just 4G so you should be fine. I doubt we will see any new phones in the next year that are lacking 3G radios.

I did a quick Google search and they said the Galaxy Note does support 3G and is a world phone. So I'd be fine there if I do get the Note (whenever it comes to Toronto, Canada).

So, if the Galaxy Note supports 3G (3G radio) then I'd guess the Galaxy SII-X would as well.

Plus, 3G is still the standard. Doubt they'll phase it out for a long time.

I asked in case I plan to bring the phone abroad and they only have 3G. Heard 4G support/performance in the US is bad. Not sure how it is in Toronto. Or Canada.

It depends on the network for 4G currently. VZW has over 100 LTE markets, Sprint has many as well but I think they are going to be phasing out wimax and going to LTE as well, AT&T hasn't released any LTE phones yet but they announced early today they will have new LTE markets and some phones for them starting Nov 6th. Where I am at I get 4G pretty much all the time except at my house and it works great. You are right 3G is the standard and will be for a while 4G right now is just an extra to those who can use it. I have no clue about support in Canada

As you can probably tell I'm totally new to smartphone tech and terms. But learning as I go.

Was just Googling LTE. Found out carriers are offering LTE sticks which I'm guessing are for laptop use and 4G phones that are not LTE.

I'm just researching at the moment. Won't be buying till later in 2012. I'm selling my condo suite now and when I do I will be heading to Los Angeles while my new home is being built.

So, come Fall 2012, there might be a Galaxy Note in Toronto or a Galaxy S3. Or, COUGH, COUGH...Apple might join the 4G crowd and put it on their "iPhone 5" along with a larger screen. 3.5" on the 4s?? What gives? Positively wimpy. Even if the 4s has the processing speed. Was going to buy the 4s if it came with a 4-4.5" screen. The wimpy screen size was the deal breaker for me.

Yeah a year from now you will have plenty of other choices in your phone. The LTE sticks as you called them would be for laptops and wouldn't work in a phone but yes I think most carriers offer a mobile internet type service as well.

If you aren't set with iOS vs Android then I would suggest researching the differences between the two to see which one you like better. Android is easier to customize if you are somewhat tech savvy and willing to put a little time into learning how to do so. iOS offers a UI that is harder to customize and is much more locked down. But next year there will be plenty of other options available and the iPhone 5 very well could have a larger screen and a 4G option who knows

I'm not set on either android or iO5 formats. Though I am an Apple fan. If Apple puts out an iPhone 5 with at least a 4.3" screen and 4G support...then I'll go with Apple. If not...then I'll probably get a Samsung Galaxy S3 or Note 2. Or HTC Amaze 4G "next version". Will be interesting to see what we get next Fall.
