Help Bad Mobile Data Radio

LoopyD

Android Enthusiast
This issue seemed to start when I reactivated my phone. I purchased a SIM and reactivated it. The ESN check through the support phone call I made to 1-888-8METRO8 passed. The LTE hardly worked after a while. After several support calls, I did the following procedures, trying to correct it:

KDZ flash to stock 12B
Tried every custom ROM here
Tried every APN, even unlocked my phone and tried again
Tried manual network selection
Tried a few radio optimization apps
Checked baseband, current version

I can't make calls even with full signal When I try to dial, the phone hangs briefly on "Dialing.." then disconnects the call. Happens on stock 12B, XPerion, and all of the KitKat ROMs. Strange things:

*228 works
Toll free calls work on occasion (800), but 1-888-8METRO8 has the same dialing concern
No incoming calls
Text messages only come in briefly when connected to data
Outbound text only works when connected to data
Data shows, but does not connect or process at all. When I turn the screen on, data disappears.

It's either a programming malfunction or a bad radio. If there is a correct programming menu solution, I'd like to hear it. Otherwise I'm buying a new F6...one without the ov camera!

If its under a year old RMA the device call lg..be sure to make her stock before sending it in. And just buy a new device if you still want too.

Found out it's not the device! Whew. I went driving, stopped a few places and scanned repeatedly and let the phone sit with the stock ROM. Seems removing the battery and SIM at the same time resets some kind of internal carrier list! I can now send/receive texts and call out, but LTE is not working. The menu is defaulting to WDCMA/GSM auto no matter what I do...I've been able to go manual LTE, but when I reboot it's back again..

Believe it or not, I've spent the last 3.5 hours with Straight Talk support for what seems to be the same or similar problem. This morning, woke up to no data. I've rebooted almost 50 times with APN settings checks, SIM, No SIM, clearing cache, rebooting in airplane mode, etc etc with no luck. I was about to wipe and start fresh but decided to check the forum to see if any new worthy ROMS are available to try (currently on Xperion) and saw your post.

I'm going to continue to go ahead and start fresh but thought I'd post and let you know I'm seeing similar things, *including* the WCDMA/GSM menu issue. As recently as last week this menu was defaulting to (and staying at) WCDMA/GSM/LTE auto.

Try this:

Go driving with the phone and scan in known LTE areas. First manually, then when you get a connection, switch to auto. Make sure you are outside of your vehicle and sit at a bench or something and let it scan. This fixed my issue partially. I can get 3G now at least.

..and don't remove your SIM and battery at the same time anymore! Every time you do that with this phone, the issue seems to happen again. I guess it clears some sort of PRL (Even though PRLs are for older phones)

Ahh - thanks for that.

Well, I am never even able to get 3G so far. I can get a quick glimpse of the LTE providers if I check the "Use 2G Only" box, disable data, re-enable data, and then uncheck the 2G box and do a search. But if I try to manually register to a HOME/LTE provider I still get a timeout and it reverts to WCDMA/GSM only, and never even hits 3G.

I FIXED IT!

After messing with it 3G wouldn't even work. But I got it to lock to LTE and not revert to WDCMA/GSM Auto mode. My network screen now shows LTE/WDCMA/GSM Auto!

What I did:

Locked it to 2G only (GSM), then scanned, it registered, authenticated using the carrier's stock service app (Mine is My Metro), find yours on the Play Store. You gotta wait a long time for it to actually connect. Once you authenticate, call your carrier's activation line. I dialed *490, that gave me MetroPCS activation line.

Ask for a full account reset. Confirm with them your IMEI number and your ICC (SIM card number) then ask them to reconfigure the network. The guy on the line instructed me:

Disable Sync in your notification drawer. This prevents GSM from overloading and erroring out.
Turn off the phone after the phone call
Remove SIM and Battery
Wait 1 minuteReplace SIM, then Battery
Turn phone on
Select carrier mode LTE/WDCMA/GSM Auto
Authenticate with "Select Automatically"
Notice how it works this time?
It will default to WDCMA/GSM
Authenticate again in your carrier app
WAIT 2 HOURS
Boom, lock to LTE/WDCMA/GSM Auto after about 30 minutes\

During the 2 hours you'll get a lot of dropped calls, so don't use your phone.

Screenshot to prove it.

Notice how it says "2G" instead of "2x" :D

Authenticated with carrier after downloading carrier service app on WiFi after connecting to Google Account and Google Play:

NICE! Probably the carrier app that triggered something. I am on Straight Talk so maybe my issue was different, anyway, I bypassed the "call your carrier syeps" because ST customer support is basically non-existent, but followed the rest of your steps to the letter and 4G was locked within 2 minutes.

And for ST users, the app is called "Straight Talk My Account". It will take forever to load. When it does, hit "Agree" and enter your phone number. Once your main account page loads, go to the step where you pull the battery and SIM for 1 minute.

Got my bill lowered for this! ;) Downgraded since I don't use the high speed data that much (limited coverage in my area)

Note: When you're in a bad coverage area the radio has to "fall back"

First LTE will fail
Then WDCMA will fail
Then fall back to GSM

So I don't get data right away when I turn my phone on. Takes a good 10 seconds after boot.

Uhm...Guys, the reason for the bad data from the towers is because we are under a new band frequency. The f6 works on band 4 and now we are in band 12.
