The iPhone has RedLaser - RedLaser ? Impossibly accurate barcode scanning - works very well.

ShopSavvy is pretty good too! AND it is free, whereas RedLaser isnt.

I downloaded this app and then scanned just about every thing in my office it got 1 thing right a jar of coffee probably the most important thing. However the others were either cannot find or summat wierd like the sun newspaper says its a 200 gram tub of Sour Dummies

i tend to find whenever i scan magazine/newpaper barcodes, it rarely comes up with what it's supposed to be

eg - i scanned the march edition of Linux Format and it informed me i'd scanned ..

going further in, it brings up various music tracks.


Most actual products (eg coffee / weetabix etc) do come up correctly

It mainly works on entertainment goods like CDs/Books/Games etc.
Food is a rarity.

Just an observation, but I refuse to turn into an anorak, sifting through boxes of Weetabix in my local ASDA in the hope that it turns up a cheaper deal at Tesco.

Now, expensive toys and gadgets - that's a different matter entirely. Unfortunately, I was looking for a replacement car recently. Imagine my chagrin when I discovered they did not have barcodes...eventually I found one but it turned out to be a heavy duty cadmium battery - best price

I found Shopsavvy really useful the other day in Costco - it recognised all the items (mainly consumer electronics and household) and resulted in me making one purchase only out of everything I scanned. Costco as any member knows is not always as cheap as you are lead to believe, so being able to price compare is very useful here.
