Barcode scanning a joke

Shopsavvy works for me, too. I believe they've recently updated it to allow scanning of QR codes, so I decided to use it exclusively (though Barcode scanner was fine, too).

Funny thing is, I don't bother scanning products like Soda, because I'm unlikely to drive far enough to make the difference in cost worth the time. For higher priced items, such as the aformentioned electronics and such, or office products, I've found it useful.
 
Well here's the thing. The results you get are only going to be as good as the info that the stores publish about their products on the interwebs. It's not like these apps are tied into the inventory system of every retailer. They search for advertised prices in commonly found locations. As someone mentioned, Target isn't advertising a lot of TP on it's website.

Try this. Go into Target and head for the DVD's. Find a copy of Planet Earth on Blu-Ray. Scan it and see what you get. I did that before Christmas. Target price in store was $84. Walmart online price was $38. ($46 savings) I bought a lot of Blu-Ray's for presents and used the barcode apps to find the low price on every one. When I added it all up, the barcode app saved me over $350 on Blu-rays (when comparing the price at the location I was at with the lowest price).

I did the same for a Blu-ray player and also some USB Hard drives. Again, saved well over $150 on those.

Granted in some cases, I had to wait a few days for shipping as opposed to leaving the store with the item, but most of the online places had free shipping and I didn't pay sales tax with most, so even more savings.

The bottom line is that if the info isn't widely published somewhere where the app can get it, it's not really the app not working.
 
I'm with the kitty.

1) If you don't like it then don't use it
2) The apps are amazing. I was able to scan a couple of gifts that were given to me that I won't ever use, and got a good set of prices to Craigs List them.

Yeah, the database for grocery items is lacking, but that isn't what the apps are for now is it?
 
Geez, man, if you have to worry about finding the best price for a mountain dew, you have bigger problems than finding a good barcode scanner.

I have barcode scanner, and it works great. It helped me get a price match on my new laptop!
 
I was in Target last week looking at toasters and the store was a mess and nothing was labeled...so I used ShopSavvy to see what the price was at the target I was in! Genius! Price Check Aisle Droid!!
 
<shakes head> This seems to be more of an issue with the user than the application. IF you don't know how the thing works, and aren't willing to read what people try and say about it, don't bother.
 
Well excuse the fk outta me! My bad, I guess a barcode scanner only works on electronics,huh. How fking stupid do you think I am?! It's called 'shopsavvy'. Didn't catch it saying anywhere that it works only on electronics. And yes there are many folks out there, myself included, who actually do price checking on things other than a fking DVD player. Groceries is where a lot of money goes so price checking that is common sense to many of us. Good grief...

my god who pissed in your cereal lol. take it easy man, its a free app that someone is developing. it works good on certain things because of the retail space that sells them. Grociries online isn't a big thing

I'm pretty sure that the UPC on pop is different based on region and perhaps by store. So that would be why you aren't getting any results.
 
Barcode scanner works fine on my droid. I even did a monster drink and it pulled up numerous sites where I could by a case or singles.:cool:

well i guess he could resort to the adds an coupons if saving 35cents on some TP will make a difference.

To OP though, Give it time, its still being worked on maybe one day it will do what you want. I did find a jacket i scanned for cheaper online that was cool. i think the groceries thing is going to be a way out there. And thats only if more groceries are sold online in the future than in a store.
 
So we should expect all free apps to be worthless because, hey, they're free. lol. ..shadow you're a tool, seriously....

Man... and people wonder why FOSS (Or even just plain free) developers are getting burnt out. Release a free app and get nothing but flak about it.

The built in barcode scanning app that comes with the Droid works great for me, I'll have to give shopsavvy a try.

Only if your local stores make their information available online and most don't. Many stores (Best Buy, Target) generally have the same price, or will honor the price, between their websites and stores but Wal-Mart, for example, doesn't.
 
It would be nice if one of the bar code scanner apps would grab item info and automatically throw it into Pricegrabber (or a similar website).

They are both different. Shopsavvy will give you native local and web results, whereas Barcode Scanner will give you web results....but Barcode scanner will also scan QR Codes to get to market items or contacts.

shop savy does qr codes now with thier newest update
 
A app that works, I'd pay for. But a app that doesn't work yet is free is like pissing into the wind. Feels good but ya really don't like the results....
