OK,
Just out of curiosity, how likely is it for a mobile phone to become infected with malware or hacked via the cellular baseband?

I've heard alot of stories about phones that have been hacked or vulnerabilities in this way, but just what is the likelihood of it actually happening? Is there any method to detect this?

What do you guys think?

I think what you are asking is really just whether a phone can be hacked via an Internet connection. I don't think that cellular vs WiFi is important really. The main hacking risk is your Google account rather than the phone itself.

The primary malware infection route in Android involves tricking the user into installing the malware themselves.

Long story short, good password, two factor authentication, turn off "install from unknown sources" except when needed, and be careful what apps you install and where you install from. Don't worry about magic hacking of your phone via the cellular network, concentrate on the real threats.
