I thought Google's motto was don't be evil or something like that. First the basic text app fails to process iMessaging photos correctly, forcing us to use Hangounts, which has it's own problems. Then they consciously break the default email app. You can attach photos or videos, but regular files are all blacked out -- you cannot attach documents using your normal email. But, guess what ? You can attach docs using Gmail. This is not a coincidence. I am not going to be forced to use Gmail. This is evil. Please fix both the text and email apps so I don't have to use Hangouts or GMail.

It's no good asking us to fix it - we're just a discussion forum for Android users, and have no connection to Google at all ;).

You are right that Google have stopped developing many of the Android Open Source Project apps, preferring you to use their own (closed source) apps. But if the AOSP one doesn't do what you want and you don't want to use the Google one, there are plenty of alternatives in the Play Store. This is certainly what I do: where the pre-installed apps aren't to my taste I just find alternatives (and indeed I have neither GMail nor Hangouts installed on my phone).

(As for iMessage, I don't know about that particular problem, so can't say whether it's Apple or Google's fault. Certainly Apple seem to have been happy to leave iMessage problems which were definitely their fault untouched as long as they only caused problems for non-Apple users. And I'm typing this on an Apple computer, so no prejudice against that company here).
