Battery Apps ... turn off Apps or not?

Which 'school of thought' is correct:
- Leave Apps to be managed by Android
- Use a Battery App to stop Apps when not in use

The more reading I do on this subject the more confused I get ... so I am asking our experts & experienced users for help please. I tried Battery Doctor because, apart from turning off Apps, its supposed to 'help' battery up time and overall life. Does it?

Automatic task killers, whatever they call themselves, will often end up fighting the OS - they kill an app, the OS restarts it, the battery suffers.

Personally I'd suggest installing a monitor (e.g. GSam Battery Monitor) so that you can see whether any app is using an unreasonable amount of juice, and if so see what you can do about that one. Only apply a fix if there is a problem.

Going through your apps and checking whether any are syncing too frequently, and reducing frequency if so, may help.
