Battery calibration apps - Hog wash, or actually work?

My Note 4 is rooted, was working just fine until I dropped it.

then it stopped charging past 84%, the charge LED stays red.

so, I used a battery calibration app on it, and that just made the "indicated" max charge worse, at 66% now.

I have 4 batteries, two new, two used but all of them show exactly the same thing.

So, asking for opinions, or some Real Knowledge from those who dig deep into the Android OS.

are these apps worth a damn, have potential to ruin the phone?
I am afraid now to try to use a different one, or run the one I used a 2nd time....
the charge level drops from 66% to 40% in just a few minutes of using Facebook.

IF you feel an app works, please provide a link to that one.
Thanks in Advance

Makes me Wonder if its something wrong with the phone. I had same problem with my note. Doing that on top end of charging. It would freeze not go completly charged until I unplugged and replugged.
