How Often Should I Charge My Gadget's Battery to Prolong Its Lifespan?

After reading this article, I have some questions on how best to prolong the life of my phone's battery.

My Situation:

I have recently bought the HTC Wildfire S, before using it, I charged it until it was full, and have been using it for a little over a day ( I have switched it off in college).

Should I do a full charge/discharge cycle ? How do I do that, exactly ? Do I charge for 8 hours, or just until the battery is full ? Should I leave the phone turned on while charging, or turn it off ? Should I also let it discharge through natural use ?

Any other battery charging tips that the article may not have mentioned ?

Thanks in advance...

EDIT:
I've also lurked around a bit and found a helpful post from one of the mods, lunatic59...:

1. Let your phone drain to nothing (phone shuts itself off)
2. Charge the phone uninterrupted using the a/c charger, not the usb cable.
3. When fully charged, unplug and reboot the phone.
4. plug the phone back into the charge and shut it off. Continue to charge for at least an additional hour.
5. Reboot phone one more time.

Should I leave the phone turned on or off while doing step 2 ? This method seems to contradict the article somewhat, so which one should a go by ?

Yes I believe that what you have found is good. But that you should only do it once as it is quite hard on the battery. So after you have done that, charge your battery to 100% and always have a charge of minimum 30%

I've had a real problem with my battery even trying to charge, but I've just let it run down completely, plugged it in... and still it won't charge.

I've just got it back from the shop (it wouldn't turn on then!), I wonder if they've 'inadvertantly' swapped the battery?!!

As we speak, it's been on charge for well over 24 hours. I turned it off overnight, plugged in, wondering if that would help but it hasn't, and after a morning in the plug I thought I'd try the US - the green bar's still sticking at the lightning bolt.

I don't know what else to do. (apart from chucking it out the window muttermuttergrumblegrrr).

Suppose I'll have to be (even more) patient. Thanks for letting me sound out! :argh:
