Battery Does Not Charge Post JuiceDefender Update

I have used Juice Defender and liked it... Until now.

I have a Samsung Galaxy S (Vibrant - TMobile) phone running 2.1.

My phone does not charge when it is plugged and the phone is on. The battery charges in a separate wall charger just fine. This happens both when plugged into a wall outlet with the OEM charging plug, and when plugged into USB with the OEM USB cord. This is the case with two OEM batteries, manufactured several months apart.

The battery indicator in the upper right corner indicates it is plugged in and charging. When I open the application "Battery Meter", it reads that the battery is charging. It shows battery "Health: Good" and "Voltage: 3932 mv". Also, I have my phone set to stay "on" when plugged in, and it does indeed stay on when it is plugged in. It's just not accepting a charge.

This happens in several different outlets on several different circuits.

It first started happening two nights ago during my routine overnight charge.

It did not happen last night during my routine charge.

It is happening now.

What's different or unique about the times? Two nights ago, before the charge, I updated JuiceDefender from whatever it was to v 3.1.4. Last night, before the charge, I UNinstalled it. I reinstalled it this afternoon.

So it seems likely there's some connection.

And it's not a false reading from Battery Meter; I discovered this problem when my battery died whilst plugged in overnight.

So, what to do? I really like(d) JuiceDefender - is there a similar app? Or do I just wait until 3.1.5 comes out and see what happens? (Waiting for TMo FroYo will take much longer!)

Thanks

I have Juice Defender/Ultimate Juice and have no issues charging with USB or wall charger.

Are you sure you don't have a misbehaving app? Other than JD, that is.

The only change was the upgrade. Same cords as always.

No, I'm not sure I don't have a misbehaving app, but whatever it is, I'd have to assume that it only misbehaves when JD v. pi is not installed.

(I DID buy some new cords, but they haven't arrived yet).

Great avatar. I do have a task killer, will have to read your post on that.

(Wait. The cords that I bought (but haven't received) are USB B, not Micro. So that couldn't be it, anyway!)

What I'm trying now is reinstalling JD, but DISABLING IT when I charge. Just to see if that helps. That will be a pain, but we'll see.

Thanks, though - keep those cards and letters coming!

Even when JD is disabled, the battery does not charge. In fact, it drains FASTER, because the screen is on all night.

So there's definitely another app causing the problem.

Do you have Missed Message Flasher or NoLED installed? They are really bad battery drainers.

If you install Battery Left and get it calibrated (full discharge, then full recharge) -- then use as usual, it will log a History of usage that you can analyze (e.g., what used CPU, what kept a partial wakelock on the phone, etc.) -- That might help you diagnose the culprit.

Another good app to do that is Watchdog Lite (in my signature) -- That will alert you to apps using too many CPU cycles ("misbehaving").

Between Battery Left and Watchdog, you might be able to figure out the app that is draining your battery.

Good luck!

Well the reason the screen stays on is I have it set to always be on when it's plugged in (it's my bedroom clock at night).

So the phone KNOWS it's plugged in, it gives every indication that it's charging, it's just not transferring power to the battery. In fact, given that it's draining, it's not taking any power from the cord.

I will run those two apps, but I'm having a hard time getting past the fact that there is a one-to-one correlation between having JD 3.1.4 installed and my battery's lack of ability to charge.

In the meantime, how can I go about DOWNgrading to a previous version of software? I can only find the latest greatest on the Google... Is there a site that keeps archives (kind of like filehippo for Windows?)

This is really maddening, because I've actually been a huge advocate for JD with other Android folks.

Thanks I'll give that a try.

I have posted on their website, but haven't found a way to contact them directly.

You might want to try clearing cache and data for JD under app manager and check to see if JD is leaving any files on the SD card. If you haven't already that is. Maybe it's leaving something behind when you uninstall and when reinstall it's just referring back to those files.

Doubt it, but it's worth a shot.

When I go to Applications => Mnaage Applications, the Cache is already clear, and there are no defaults.

So, you're suggesting:
- Uninstall
- Search the SD card for anything that looks like it's associated with JD and remove it
- Reinstall.

Correct?
