Help Battery drain and running hot overnight: Play Services?

gtbarry

Android Expert
Just in the last week or two my battery has been draining noticeably faster overnight and is occasionally hot in the morning. Never had this happen before. There has been no change in my overnight phone habits in the last month or two.

Google Play Services is listed in the battery stats as the largest battery user.

Anyone else having this issue?

NOTES:
I turn sync off overnight (always done it this way)
Stock Android
Not rooted

Play services have a update check your play store for it .if nothing is needed just try and play a YouTube video . it will block you and a pop up will pop out saying you need to update your play service

I had this problem on Friday. Google Play had an issue which caused a wake lock on people's phone and Play never worked. It seemed to have been resolved by Friday night. Maybe it happened again?

I just checked my phone and Google Services is just below Screen on my battery usage, and has kept my phone awake for 48min (out of 10 hours). This does seem like a lot for me.

Do you have location services turned on?
Yes. Always have though. And no location service using apps are high up on the battery usage list.

when was the last time you rebooted your phone?
Within the last week

Tried this on youtube app 5.6.36 and there was no pop up

Did you clear the data and cache from the play services.
Just tried this. No idea why I didn't think of that before.

I'll let you know if this happens more. Maybe one of the suggestions above will fix things.

BTW, Google Play Services version: 4.4.52 (1174655-038)

In the settings of the Play Store app. There is a setting that will automatically update your apps
There has been a lot of updates lately and that my have been your issue.

I have this setting unchecked so I can update when I want to on my terms.

IIRC, the play services gets updated in the background, regardless of the Play Store setting that controls updates to apps. User doesn't really have the option of forcing the play services update (short of downloading the apk and sideloading it)

I recently had some experience with this. Google+ is a pre-installed app, but I hadn't signed in since wiping and rooting the phone. As soon as I signed in and updated the app I noticed a steep drop off in battery life. A full charge would last 30+ hours with my usage before signing into Google+, but 15 hours at most afterwards. I disabled the program from the "Apps" section of settings, and my battery life has shot back up to 30+ hours again. Today I'm sitting at 90% after 5 hours.

Just something to try.

Bringing this thread back from the dead to report my issues:

Symptoms: the last 5 days I have noticed between 4 and 5pm (for some reason, always around the same time) that my phone is getting quite warm. Looking at battery stats shows a continually higher use by google play services. Leaving the device without intervention will lead to a massively quickly draining battery and eventual shutoff at low battery and extremely high temperature.

(one thing to note in this screenshot is that if I hadn't intervened, google play services would likely be 70-80% usage by the time the phone ran out of battery and shut off.)

Does anyone have any idea what I should do about this? It's making my phone unreliable. I can't get through a whole day, and I need to. (and I used to be able to no problem.)

Whoa... That's some pretty excessive use by Google Play Services! Strange that it keeps happening at the same time of day as well.
Sounds like your having a "Sync" or "Location service issue and it's causing Play Services to constantly run, keep the phone awake and kill the battery.

Just some suggestions...
Have you tried just rebooting the device or rebooting to recovery and wiping "Dalvik cache and Cache"?
Have you tried going into "Settings/Apps/All" and scroll down to and click on Google Play Services and then clear the "Data/Cache" for it and see of that helps?
You might even want to clear the "Data/Cache" for any and all of the apps used by Google Play Services - Google Search, Google Now, Google Maps, etc)

For a temporary test... You can try going in to "Settings/Location" and turning "Location" Off.
Also select "Location Mode" and try a different location mode. If your using "High Accuracy" try switching to "Battery Saving or Device only" modes and test those out.

Also test and try turning off "Google Location Reporting" "Settings/Location select Google Location Reporting and turn it off.

Possibly even try booting into "Safe Mode" and see if that helps.

I'm pretty positive that it's related to either Location services, Google Now or with some syncing issue.

I'd try the above and/or keep poking around in these areas for the problem.

There's also an app - Disable Service, you can use the app and then go in to Google Play Services and disable everything in there that deals with location.

I've done reboots. And I have cleared data/cache in settings>apps.

I'm wondering if it has something to do with the fact that I've got location reporting turned on, and I'm pretty consistently in areas of poor service, although i continue having the drain even if I move to a location with better service.

I'll try recovery cache clearing and see if that helps.

I'd be a little annoyed if it has to do with location services (usually left in battery saving mode) since I use google location services for a lot of things.

Yeah, I hear you there! I use location services a lot too and that would be quite annoying.
I have mine on "Battery saving mode" also. I did read that "Device only mode" seemed to help a lot of users with this issue.

You might even want to look through this thread it has some good reading/ideas - Is it normal for Google Play Services to dra… | Nexus 5 | XDA Forums

Hopefully you can narrow it down and figure it out!

Happened again today but to a lesser extent. Does anyone know if there is a way to force a play services update? if not, i'll just wait for it to happen (I'm on 5.83 right now)
