Help Battery drain

The Samsung Galaxy S III Mini that I currently have is actually handed over to me by my mother, who had used it for over a year. She used to call a lot.. And now the total call time is 637 hours. The original battery had many issues, it would immediately get switched off when the battery was at a normal level, sometimes even when the battery is at 99 percent. So she bought a replacement battery and used it. That is the current battery in the phone. But there has been one problem since the first day the battery was used. It would drain from 100 % to 75% with No usage. Then it would drain normally. Nowadays it has been having inane battery life issues.

The battery will be at about 70 or 60%. Today morning I used it, it came down to 40%. AND, I put the phone down, picked it up after about 5 minutes, and the battery was at 28%. This happens all the time. Normal drain while usage, extreme drain after you put the phone down. I looked at the battery usage status and Android OS and Android system are the drainers. Please help.

I have the exact same problem with my phone, which is less than 2 years old.

Once the battery reaches 40-50%, it will instantly plummet by around 20%. Restarting the device usually reports the battery is then 10-20%. Plugging the device into the charger and rebooting will send it back up to around 40% again.

I have no idea what's causing this, as I don't have any significant app usage (highest is android o/s at around 30-40%, all other Apps are 10% or lower, screen brightness is set at 25%, location services, sync, etc all disabled), and I'm not getting any wakelocks.

I cleared the cache yesterday which saw better battery usage during the day (it had only reached 70% after about 10 hours, instead of discharging entirely), but then had the same problem again this morning.

I think I may have cracked it. OP, do you have any custom ring tones? I found that these were triggering a bunch of processes on my phone under 'Media.' Using GSam Battery Monitor I disabled:

Download Manager
Downloads
DRM-Protected Content Storage

I also reset Google Play Services, Google Music, etc to factory default.

My battery life has been much better since doing this.
