Help Battery drained inexplicably

Hello,

I recently upgraded to a phone running Android v 5.1.1 and the latest updates. I've configured the phone to optimize battery/data consumption - low brightness, unchecking auto-sync on most apps, queuing background data, using Stamina mode, etc.

The phone's worked perfectly for two weeks, but today my battery drained unexpectedly. I wasn't using my phone for anything other than surfing the web.

Normally the battery lasts 2-3 days with that level of usage.

Looking at the power consumption, it looks like the phone (a Z3 Compact) was Awake while the battery fell off a cliff. I've attached a couple of screenshots.

Would appreciate any thoughts on what might be causing this?

Thanks.

Thanks a lot. I tried this and it looks like it's working normally now. Though I'd still like to understand why this may be occurring.

There were no obvious configuration or apps changes.

Thanks for the information, that's quite interesting. So far it seems to be working fine today, except for one issue..

In an attempt to further conserve the battery, I've started disabling the WiFi while at work. The WiFi is definitely off (checked via Settings > WiFi).

However, on the Power Consumption screen I still screen the WiFi indicator as consuming power, even though Awake is now behaving correctly.

Some phones are buggy displaying wifi on in that graph. The HTCs are fine, the Nexus isn't. If you suspect the graph, GSam Battery Monitor does a reliable job.

If it's not the graph, most popular cause is a security app setup to locate your phone. Lookout is known to do that wrong.

You can see what apps have permission to change the wifi state with Permission Explorer -

BTW - if your phone is sleeping with the screen off, wifi on ought not be consuming much power at all - the radio would be on and idling.

Check the advanced wifi settings, make sure that scanning always isn't on.

There is also an option (hidden in the Advanced WiFi settings on my phone - which are well hidden, as you need to press a little 3-dot button when in the WiFi settings to even see they exist) to let Google's location services and other apps scan for WiFi networks even when WiFi is off. It might be worth checking that is disabled if you want to be sure that off really means off.

A-ha! To paraphrase Clousseau, the case may be "solve-ed".

Prior to reading the last two posts, I went to the Advanced settings of the WiFi menu and disabled the following,
- Network Notification
- Scanning always available

That seemed to do the trick, as WiFi no longer appears in the Power Management screen. More importantly, the expected life of the charge jumped from 18 hours to 1 Day 23 hours, which is consistent with my experience thus far.

Then I read the last two posts, so I think I may be onto something.

Thanks again for all the help.
