I have a nexus 7 1st generation, the battery drains when it is plugged in so it doesnt charge, however, it does charge when turned off.

I have tried two different wires, I charge using the wall socket.
I have tried using different sockets but I still experience the same problem.
I haven't rooted it or anything

I've been on trouble shooting forums etc and have installed battery moinot widget, its says Status: discharging AC plugged in
Health: good
Temperature: 27

If it charges when off but not when on there are 2 possibilities. One is that when on something is using a lot of power, which you've considered. The other is that the charger is not providing very much current. You say you've used 2 different wires and different wall sockets, but is it the same charger in each case? If so it could be that the charger is failing.

What if you try to charge using a usb socket on a computer - that should produce a lower maximum current than a wall charger, so if it charges normally from a USB socket but not with the charger that would tell you that there was something wrong with the charger.
