Help battery has dropped from 85% to 21% in 10 mins

Morning all

My phone has been sat on my desk this morning - and barely used. Wifi is off, 3g is off, no calls made etc. When I last looked it was 85%. Ten minutes later is 21% and dropping a few percent every few minutes.

My battery life is as rubbish as everyone else's - usually needs charging midway through the day but it's never done this before.

Any ideas?

What's showing in Settings > About > Battery Use? Is there a particular process which is running higher than usual?

Display 33%
Dialer 14%
Android system 13%
Cell standby 12%
Phone idle 10%

then a few bits and bobs at 1%

Now down to 9% total battery left. Ridiculous.

Hmm that seems pretty normal, so there must be something else doing it.

If you download and install this app (Better Battery Stats) and run it you can do an option to show battery use by wake lock (as in what processes are running when the phone is asleep) and the first result could be what's causing the problem.

If that doesn't work I'll try and think of something else

My phone did this recently & I knew it had to be an app I'd downloaded so I went on a deleting spree (I'd accumulated a lot of crap) Seems to have solved the problem.

At the time I had it plugged into my laptop via USB and a notification actually came up saying the battery was draining faster than it could recharge!! Never seen that before & caused a bit of concern.

I was going to just look for the offending app but I did need a bit of a clean up really.

My battery is pretty good but I had the same issue as BynoUK on the usb charging a few weeks ago and ran task manager, this cleared the running apps and there where a few, and its been fine since, I am a moderate to heavy user and can get 17 hours out of the battery running the app Green Power premium, some guys dont like this kind of app but I have tried it disabled and my battery is awful down to 10 hours tops.

maybe not exactly the same problem, but my wifes desire drops charge totally and switches off when it gets to around 35%. it doesnt do it every tiume, which gives me hope the battery isnt totally gone, but most times it does. just switches itself off, and if i try to switch it back on it shows 0% and goes straight off again.

could it be anything to do with battery stats? any ideas how i can test and sort this?

thanks
