I notice that exchange services is using up a lot of data and battery. I had to delete my work email to stop it. Could that be the problem? It would be nice to find a fix for this.

When I first updated to 4.0.4 (from 2.3.6) my battery drained very quickly. Did a factory reset and speed and battery life are back to normal.

I've noticed the battery is worse with 4.0.4. With 2.3.6 I could get 3 days pretty easy. With 4.0.4 I get about 2 days. So it's not horrible but it's certainly worse. Andriod system used to always be about 5-7% of my bat and now it sits at about 14% and I'm told that's normal for 4.0.4. So I'm pretty sure battery usage got a little worse with the update, nothing too major though.

I don't know about that...I've been on v4.0.4 for several days and Android System is usually around 10-15%. Screen, Voice Calls, etc. are often higher, which indicates to me that although the "system" seems to take more battery, you have to remember that ICS handles certain processes a bit different from GB. With hardware acceleration you get more performance in the graphics/display, which means higher consumption for those related tasks, but lower overall battery consumption since the main CPU is not processing these tasks at lower levels.
Personally, I find battery life to be about the same overall. The first day or so I thought battery life was worse too, but then I realized I was playing with the phone more - a new OS means changes and learning the layout, so more "on" time. Now that I'm used to it, I find it's similar to GB. Overall, I find it's about the same on v4.0.4 compared to v2.3.6 GB. Just remember that you can't compare individual processes the same from major version changes to new versions as the demands of those processes often will change in each major version change.
And don't forget that although v4.0.x previously had battery issues, many users report that v4.0.4 has fixed those battery issues, hence the wide roll out of v4.0.4 to many users.

After I installed ICS I thought the battery was draining a bit too fast so I did a factory reset. It was "Google Services" that was at the top. Now it's *worse* ! I can't go 1/2 day without plugging in. Now it seems the big drain is my Wifi (my router is close to me but not in the "donut" area so no excuse). It's never been better than 2 (occasionally 3) bars. Removed the case it's in but reception is no better.
I downloaded Wifi On/Off which is supposed to turn off my Wifi overnight and whenever it can't find a signal but it doesn't help. Uninstalled. I've made sure Latitude isn't trying to locate me and drain things. GPS is off, Bluetooth is off. I even use System Panel to kill off any processes before going out. I'm not impressed!
I'm thinking of another reset (although the re-install of the programs is a pain - can't find the 'reset' on Play that used to be there on the Market). Yeah I know Titanium Backup works but it's not rooted.

First thing is get rid of System Panel. It's like a task killer and they are the worst app to install. Task killers are not needed at all as Android is very good at managing memory, and they are often the reason why users have battery issues in the first place.
You should definitely try another reset, and don't install System Panel this time.

Yes, I've heard this plenty of times - I've installed System Panel since my first Android phone (LG Eve) and I rarely use it except to close down programs that won't shut down on their own. It doesn't really even register on the battery use and there is a nice monitoring part of the app that I use.
Yeah... I was afraid of that! I'll hold off on system panel this time around as you suggest. Good thing I have nothing planned this afternoon.

Why would you want to...from what I've read, V4.0.4 fixed the issues with previous versions of ICS and works pretty well. Earlier versions of ICS have several different issues.
Having said that, if you want to go back you'll need to unlock the bootloader, root the device, flash a custom recovery, wipe the device with the custom recovery, and then flash the older version.
Had the same horrible battery draining experience with my Sprint Nexus S. Received the 4.0.4 roll out from Sprint a few days ago. I noticed the Android OS was consistently at the top of the battery app. Did a little research, and found that disabling and clearing the data associated with Google+ can help. After a few hours today, the Screen has been a few percent better than the OS. What's funny is my Wife has the same phone, and hers is just fine. I think the factory reset will be in my near future.
Sorry for the noob question here, but when you do a factory reset, does it mess up your carrier settings or anything? I don't want to be stranded without the phone or something...

Take screen shots of the settings and APN and such to be sure, but it should be fine. Screen shots are taken by pressing and holding Volume Down and Power at the same time for 3 seconds. The reset will also remove all your downloaded apps, texts, call log, etc., just like a new phone. The contents of your "sd card" like music, videos, etc. will not be deleted.
PaulieC, how many hours do you get between charges? I want to avoid the factory reset, my Android OS is down at 5% but I still only get 15hours - nothing like the 2+days others mention on 404.

I definitely had this issue. Exchange Services was absolutely cooking my battery <3hrs life. Overnight charging couldn't keep up with the drain and it would be 71% charged in the morning.
I had to delete the Exchange account and force disable the Exchange Services and all was normal again.
I'm trying the full reset now to see if it will settle down again...hopefully it will as the work mail and calendar are pretty important via Exchange.
Will report back with the results.

Unfortunately I'm suffering the same problem as you in that Exchange services is killing my battery and mobile data exponentially..
Let me know if you had any success with a reset???

So a full wipe, no joy, Exchange Services still eating battery at an extreme rate.
I disabled contacts sync as I've seen mention it can be part of the issue and it seemed to help a bit, but still cooking the battery in ~5hrs.
I'll have to disable use of Exchange until they put out a fix. My phone has to last longer than this.

This is a known issue with Exchange Services - a looping error is causing the CPU to work much harder than it should and it's draining the battery. More users reporting the issue will help to isolate the issue and allow a fix. See here:

Not yet...I would guess that the bug is hard to locate and fix because not a lot of users have reported exactly how it happens. It's like driving your car to the mechanic and saying, "my car's broken", and then waiting for him to fix it. It's going to take time if they don't know what's broken...So there's no fix for this? Just the option to report the already known bug?

****ing Android is so shit. So much potential, but it's so amateur it's a joke.
Love my Nexus S in terms of hardware but Android is slow, buggy not the prettiest and now this.. Renders the phone pretty much useless!
Plus those Android Developer guys on Google Groups don't even approve my support thread so there's no one who will be addressing this.
