Battery life after kitkat update

Haven't noticed any change since the update I got on Thursday. Have not done metrics or anything but no obvious change in routine use. YMMV.

At first yes, battery was rapidly depleting. I have since done a FDR and more importantly started examining where the battery was being eaten. I found most of it was screen and then after I got the brightness under control it was WiFi. I then set to turn off during sleep and then set apps not to use WiFi when off. I am not at 89% left with 1 day and 5 hours on battery.

Thanks. I was holding off asking the two previous posts. One bad battery and one good battery. The first I would ask is "did you do a Factory Data Reset after the update"?

Good battery. No FDR yet. Won't FDR until I come up with an easy way to backup angry birds status without a sort of hoop jumping...

Are there global settings to make the changes you talk about?

My battery life is noticeably worse after the update.
Previously my phone would go 2-3 days before battery got down to ~25%.
Now I'm at 25% after a bit more than 24 hours.
I keep WiFi off 99% of the time.
I haven't changed any settings besides vibration duration, and I don't really type a lot.

Any suggestions on what else to try? I have not done an FDR yet because I really don't want to blow away all the data on the phone's memory.

Google, do you read these forums?

This is no different from most OTAs, but in this case, we made a major jump from JB to Kit Kat (4.1.2 to 4.4.2). So, usually, battery life isn't the greatest when you just take the OTA with all your apps still installed.

I always do a complete wipe of the system before taking the OTA. Usually, I FXZ back to the latest stock before the OTA and then apply the OTA manually.

With Kit Kat, my battery life has been as good if not better than under JB. As much as people hate doing FDRs, they are a good thing, especially if you've been running the previous version for a long time. So much gunk gets built up that doing some "spring cleaning" once in a while is always a good thing.

Oh, and I doubt Google reads these forums. They have more pressing matters at hand, and actually, Kit Kat is the most stable yet. Before, under JB, I was getting a lot of slow downs. With Kit Kat on this phone, it's like a brand new phone with better hardware.

Thanks for the reply. I'm going to have to do some research to learn what most of those acronyms and terms mean. OTA / FXZ / FDR / "wipe"... I'll figure it out.

History has shown that that you will do a Factory Data Reset after a major system upgrade.

The Factory Data Reset should be planned into the process and you should do it when it is most convenient not when you are forced to do it.

Ginger Bread to Ice Cream Sandwich
Ice Cream Sandwich to Jelly Bean
Jelly Bean to Kit Kat
... I did a Factory Data Reset each time.

As you reinstall the apps from Play Store you may find that some do not reinstall because they are not compatible with the new release. So ... if you hadn't done the Factory Data Reset and re-installation you never would have known and could have spent a lot of time chasing a problem that had no solution.

Good luck.

Even with a FDR I can not get the 10+ days before a charge I had before. The phone though seems snappier so I am sure this has something to do with it too. I am now getting between 5-7 days between charges, but this took a bit of settings tweaking too.

My battery life is disappointing after the kitKat upgrad. I finally went ahead and did a FDR, but I don't see much difference in battery life after the reset. I need a bright screen to see well, so that was my biggest battery drain before KitKat and still is, but now wifi is running a close second. I've made a few tweaks to my wifi settings, and it is a little better, but not as good as pre KitKat.

Update. I did the FDR. Restored most of my data & settings; reinstalled most (not all) of my apps (didn't have many to begin with).

My battery is at 41% charge after just over 50 hours "on battery".

This is with Wifi off almost the entire time, and GPS off the entire time.

I can't say whether this is exactly as good as before the new OS version but it's clearly improved from pre-FDR.
I'll be curious to see how much that changes when I turn GPS on.

That said, what a PITA! I had to spend half a day trudging through settings and re-installing apps, to get decent battery life back, and my phone still isn't set up exactly the way I had it before.

I'm still seeing zero benefit to the new OS.

Also, and this might make everything else irrelevant, it occurs to me that I'm posting in the wrong forum.
My phone is Droid Razr M.

I originally was creating a new thread in the Razr M forum, and the forum auto-found this thread, to which I posted, overlooking that it was a different sub-forum.

Apologies for the misplaced posts.
But thanks for the suggestion of doing the FDR, which appears to have helped.

Factory Data Resets are a pain ... and unforunatly a necessity for this architecture.

The first time you do one it is really bad. The next time it is easier. You plan around the requirement and do it and don't even think about the possibility of not doing it.

I only did two Factory Data Resets on the same version on the same phone once. It was to nail down a hardware malfunction.

Well now that 4.4.2 has settled down and other apps have updated I am getting much better battery life. Right now 3 days and 2 hours up and running with76% battery left.

I got less than 12 hours from 100% to flat dead today. I was on a plane for about 4 hours and had the ear buds in the whole flight and was using it playing 2048 fit a couple hours. It drained from 30 to 0 in an hour while sitting in my pocket after lunch. Really awful battery.

Those numbers are bad, looks like at least some tweaking may help.

Did you put your phone into airplane mode? I wonder if it was trying to connect to a network. Airplane mode will turn off all the radios (3g/4g, etc) which will make it stop looking for a service tower. That alone will drain your battery pretty quick.

I never use that mode, my daughter does but she uses the phone a lot more than I.

Well, if you were on a plane like you stated, then that's why it drained your battery. You left your phone attempting to connect to a cell tower when it couldn't, so it's going to keep searching and searching which just drains the battery. That would happen no matter what version of Android you were running (JB, KK, etc).

Unless the plane offered WiFi, I would turn all radios off. If the plane had WiFi and you could connect to it, then that's they way to go.

Yes. What s motocare and how do I get rid of it. I have it turned "off" but it is still sucking power like a fiend.

I have it on mine as well but it shows little use. It says it was started by an app though.

Edit; it seems to be part of Motorola Help but I can't find that to deinstall. A suggestion is to force stop, clear data then power down and back up as maybe it is stuck.

I've been searching for this particular problem, also related to battery life. I updated to 4.4 a couple weeks ago, and have noticed a shortened battery life. More specifically, I was on a 3 hour trip from Atlanta to Birmingham 2 days ago, using the phone navigation. Phone in holder and plugged into power the entire trip, starting at a full charge. When I arrived, really needing the turn by turn directions to find the hotel, the phone froze completely. Pulled it out of the holder, and it was burning hot. Phone would not respond. Placed back into holder and power, and icon comes on telling me I was at 1% battery life. The phone and GPS sucked the battery life to zero in 3 hours, while plugged in. On my return trip, I ran a brief test of the navigation, starting with battery at 100%. In 15-20 minutes, the battery lost 8% of charge, using GPS, while plugged in. WiFi was off, bluetooth was on. This completely negates the value of nav using Google maps that I've relied upon when travelling to unfamiliar destinations. ANy ideas?
