Help Battery Life Question

I'm new to Android so a lot of this is foreign to me. My battery life has not been that great lately. And I noticed that like every 30 seconds or so, even if I'm not doing anything, my phone will be accessing the internet. I took a screenshot and attached it. I'm guessing that whenever those arrows pointing up and down shoe up, it means I am using data. This shows up constantly on both WiFi and cellular. Could that be why battery is going down so fast? And what could be causing it to continually access the internet even when I'm not doing anything?

Welcome to the curse of Android. Apps run in the background without requiring you to do anything. Any social media app, weather app, Google Now, etc.. all update periodically without you telling it to. An easy solution would be to download an app called Juice Defender, which lets you set intervals for how often apps can update (15 min, 30 min, 45 min, 1 hour...) and it also cuts your data connection when the screen is off. Of course you can control this all manually, but for someone who isn't very experienced with Android or just wants an easy way to have an app take care of this for them I highly recommend it.

OK thanks for the help. I think I'm gonna see how well it gets through today before I download that. But it definitely looks promising.

My problem with that is I use Google Voice for texting a lot of the time, so I don't want to miss a text because I don't have data on.
