Help Battery Life

Macks

Lurker
Evening guys,

Long-time lurker, first-time poster, so your help would be hugely welcomed.

I bought an OSF fairly recently as a "project phone." New to Android, and wanted to see what it was like before committing to a more expensive model when I renew my contract.

I've rooted it, and am running Cyanogen 7.0.3.

I've been through as many "battery life" threads as I can, here and elsewhere, as I know it's frustrating to keep saying the same things to new users again and again.

I've done the following things (not necessarily in this order):
- Re-calibrated the battery
- Installed Watchdog (Facebook app and Android Home Screen occasionally spike at 50% CPU... odd, right?)
- Switched off Mobile Data and Wifi. Tasker manages that for me when I need to use it.
- Brightness right down. No live background.
- Bump charged
- No Auto-Sync (but background data is enabled, as the Market Place seems to need it...)
- There are a few other bits and pieces, such as turning off some animations, etc.

However, I'm still seeing a lot of drain, sometimes to the point where I can watch the percentage tick down, only having the "Settings" menu open, for example.
It's discharging a lot at night (I know, plug it in, but I was trying to see how long I could get the battery to last without a recharge), and going into Spare Parts and looking at the Battery History graph, I can see that something is waking the phone up and preventing it sleeping properly, but I can't find what it could be.
In addition, Battery Use records the Android System as using 32%.

I'm looking at other users' figures and battery lives, and mine don't really compare at the moment.

Any advice would be hugely appreciated.

not sure m8 but try using an over/underclock app+set it to realy underclock when the screen is off.
i think Set Cpu app does this :-)

Welcome to AF! :)

When I'm trying to work out what apps are causing random battery drain, I find System Panel comes in pretty handy.

Do you have any other profiles set up in Tasker? If so, could you list them?

Thanks for the welcome!

In Tasker, it's still pretty basic, but I've got the following:
- A profile that kicks on the GPS and Mobile Data connection whenever Maps or Navigation is loaded, and then turns them off when I exit the app.
- A profile that gives me a media menu when I plug headphones in
- A profile which turns the Wi-fi on when I plug the phone in to charge (and then turns off when disconnected), and then one that auto-syncs (using Synker) when connected to a Wi-fi network.

Funkylogic, you've prompted me to add that I'm still using the ondemand governor, with a Min CPU 245Hz and Max 604. I haven't changed them yet.

There's nothing in your tasker profiles that would cause any issues. I've seen profiles or tasks that rely on the proximity sensor cause battery drain but yours looks fine.

I've the watchdog lite app installed and I get the same with the facebook app and the homescreen too so it's nothing to worry about.

Try that system panel app, leave it in monitoring mode over night and it will tell you which apps are eating into the CPU/battery. Roughly how long are you getting out of the battery and was it the same when you were using the stock software?

So, I can't quite work out how to get System Panel to specifically tell me what Apps are eating into the CPU/Battery. No more information than Watchdog would give me anyway... Nothing is spiking much beyond 1-2%. Android System is still taking up a whopping 38% though in Battery Use.

If I leave the phone, and just don't touch it, the battery has lasted 32 hours.

Last night I got a 20% drop in battery over 6 hours. This is with everything turned off (Wifi, Mobile Data, etc.)

Genuinely perplexed!

De@n, I think you're absolutely right. I flashed Cyanogen 7.1 yesterday, and (so far) the battery life has shown a MASSIVE improvement.
