Battery power usage

I just purchased a Galaxy S2 phone. I know there are apps for managing battery power and services... Is there a list somewhere of services that are not need to be running in the background that can be stopped and not affect the way the phone operates properly? Apps or services that drain battery needlessly that can be shut down completely?

For good results and a lot of customization flexibility, I highly recommend installing Juice Defender. The basic app is Free in the Play store. Install it and use the default settings, which at a minimum, disable 3G Data when not required (sleeping). However, if you want full control and options (like WiFi automatically powering up when you enter your home network, etc), I highly recommend purchasing the Juice Defender Ultimate upgrade. Apps like Juice Defender are a farce. They do not manage battery life efficiently like they claim.

Stopping services that Android needs is only a temporary stopgap. If the OS needs the service, it will simply start it over again. Often times, this uses more energy than just leaving it in RAM.

Android is not Windows. If an app is left in RAM, it does not mean it is using the CPU. Apps left in RAM are just dormant if they are not in use. CPU usage is what you need to monitor.

The best thing to do is turn off data sync on apps like facebook, email, etc if they are things you do not want running in the background.

Otherwise, accept that smartphones generally don't have the greatest battery life, regardless of manufacturer. Keep a charger handy in your vehicle, backpack, etc so that you can plug in whenever possible.

You shouldn't have to worry much about your battery. Also remember that although your battery may be fine, the phones' battery gauge (% remaining) may not appear accurate at first. As you use the phone the system will measure the battery and keep a history, As a result, the battery gauge will become more accurate over time. To help it along, you might hold off from charging until the battery level is down to around 15%-20%. Do this once or twice when your phone is new.

I've been using Juice Defender Basic for several months now and really conserves my battery on S2 in sleep mode because of course it turns off 3G data, but while in use is better to clear memory ram for background apps running and press and hold home button and swipe and close apps in use
