Battery Saving Tips

Having a multifunction phone can be a blessing. The fact that you can be away from your desk and at times still remain productive and connected to the World Wide Web through your phone is all short of a miracle. However, with multitasking and the phone working non-stop to keep you informed (Twitter, Facebook, News Widgets, RSS’s, etc…) these phones are working when you are not.
This leads to the phone being on at all times even when it is on standby. A lot of people connect their Gmail and have their corporate/personal email coming through their phones at all times. There are also features such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS and Share With Google that use up a lot of battery life. Not to mention the new UIs such as BLUR and SENSE depend on being connected to the internet give a better experience to the user.
However, there are certain things you can do to preserve battery life.
On HTC Sense there is a widget to control some of these settings.

Step 1:
There are programs like Toggle Settings which control GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Sync and Screen Brightness.

Step 2:
Choose which of these features you really need to leave on.

Step 3:
Delete any widget you do not use.

Step 4:
If you have set up any other emails make sure you set it to fetch your email every 15-30 mins rather than every 5 mins.

Step 5:
Now that you’ve thought of which features to leave on and off, turn off the ones you do not need. Ex. GPS only when you needed, Wi-Fi the same thing.

Step 6:
Screen brightness is a personal thing. I have a G1 and I have it set to 0. The only time I turn up the brightness is when the sun is really bright and the screen needs to overcome the brightness of the sun.

Step 7:
There’s a program called TaskKiller. This program lets you know which apps are currently on. It also lets you turn them off if you do not have a need for them.

These should be 7 easy steps to follow. Remember that some widgets need to stream to stay current. So the more widgets and apps you have running the more battery they will use.

I've read that BLUR refreshes all the info it needs for it's social widgets every 15 minutes even if you don't have any widgets placed on your home screen. I'm thinking about buying a Cliq but the fact that BLUR is a battery killer turns me off since the main reason I want to upgrade from my G1 is to have a phone with a keyboard that has better battery life. Is there any way to turn this "Auto refresh" feature off or at least make it longer than every 15 minutes? even better are there any BLURless roms out there? has any1 tried deleting the BLUR widgets apk? would that make it so it doesnt have to "refresh"?

I find the biggest battery killer is the screen.

I always have wifi or mobile data switched on and do not aggressively use a task killer, yet the difference between having my phone in my pocket all day and getting it out to regularly do stuff with it is phenomenal.

It can last days if I don't activate the screen (with all the mail apps etc still doing their sync, but if I turn on the screen to look at something for 5 mins every hour the battery will need charging by the end of one day.

These aren't bad guidelines but GPS won't kill your battery unless it's active. If it is active you'll see the GPS icon in the notification bar. Obviously, if you don't think something should be using GPS and the icon is in the notification bar then you have an issue you need to address.

I leave GPS enabled all the time with no adverse impact on battery life unless I'm actually using an app that uses GPS.

Same here.

Don't forget to check the battery info screen. Tackle the biggest battery hogs first.

The biggest battery killer for me is actually making phone calls...lol

I just carry a USB extender, problem solved!!
