Battery use

My battery seems not to be lasting very long, especially recently.

When I look at the battery usage it lists:

Cell standby 40%
Phone idle 36%
Wi-Fi 14%
Voice calls 6%
Display 6%

Does this seem right?

Why does cell standby and phone idle use up so much battery - 'standby' and 'idle' sound to me like somthing that shouldn't take much energy!

Sorry if I sound ignorant - but I suppose I am about this.

Any advice appreciated.

You want to turn wi-fi off for a start, that uses a hell of a lot more then 14% regardless of what the battery useage says. Try it for a day without it and the battery will last alot longer - try it if you dont believe me :)

I have actually tried turning wi-fi off before now, but then end up forgetting to turn it back on and use my data when wi-fi's available!

So I got an app - on someone's advice - called Y5, and it turns it off apart from when I'm at home. Since then the wi-fi use has gone from about 32% at any given time, to the 14 or so % you see above.

Why is this cell standby and phone idle so high though? And is there anything I can do about it?

Thank you.

That's the only problem with turning wi-fi off that i found, i'll use my data allowance and not realise lol.

My battery usage says this (if its any help to you):

Android OS 51%
Screen 22%
Cell standby 8%
Phone idle 5%
Android system 5%

and then a few apps using around 2% each.

Your's does seem very high actually, maybe you need to clear temp data such as browsing history etc? (im not an expert but things like that might just help!)

Your cell standby daveytn and phone idle are incredibly low compared to mine. Also, I don't have any battery usage listing for Android OS or Android system.

I can't understand why phone idle and cell standby take so much power (on my phone). It seems a bit of a paradox to me!

All I know is, it's been this way ever since I got my phone, but recently I am querying it because my battery just doesn't seem to be lasting long anymore.

Anyone else with any ideas?

Thanks.

Ruth - which version of the Samsung Galaxy Ace do you have?

I was going to have your thread moved to your device specific subforum so maybe someone with the same phone as you could provide specific help.

Let us know!

Hi,

Sorry for sounding stupid, but I didn't know there were different versions of Samsung Galaxy Ace?

The only other thing I know is that it's a GT-S5830 and has Android version Gingerbread 2.3.3 - is this what you mean?

Well there's the newer versions, the Ace Plus and the Ace 2, one running at 1Ghz, and the other with a dual core 800Mhz. The original ace was running a single core 800Mhz.

As for cell standby, are you in an area with fairly low network coverage? Like a chronic 50%?

Ah, I didn't know that. Well, mine is just the bog-standard Ace!

I am in the UK on Virgin Mobile, and it used to be quite a poor signal when at home - probably 30-60%, but some time ago they began using the Orange network also, and it's been better since then - say 70-90% on average.
