I have a Galaxy Note 3, which was purchased in March of 2014. The phone works well, but the battery runs down sooner than it used to, which is understandable. Should a battery be replaced over time, and would it make a difference in the way the phone runs and holds its battery power?

If it has a removable battery, then I would replace it. Batteries will degrade over time with multiple discharge / recharge cycles.

I am pretty certian it has a removeable battery, i used to own one.
You may get lucky, but most likely new OEM batteries are no longer available other than any 'new old stock' that might be lying around. Chances are those would be compromised from sitting in a discharged state for a long time.
There are probably 3rd-party aftermarket batteries available, the good news is they will be cheap and the not-so-good news is that quality on them will vary and is a crapshoot.
See if Anker makes one for the Note 3, if they do buy it. They are a reputable company and you'll get a fresh good-quality battery. I'm using one in my S5.

About two and half years ago my wife's note 2 battery started having serious problems, so I replaced it. The problem was getting a replacement battery. I of course went to Amazon first thinking it would be a breeze. Everytime I went through to purchase one, I would get an alert saying the item was sold out or no longer available. It took over a month to get one. I found a note 2 battery at a local store. It was the very last one they had in stock and no more would be ordered. We stretch out the life of the note 2 by rotating batteries. Eventually the original gave out, overall the device lasted just about a month past it's 5th anniversary date
That's not good news at all, and I thought it would be no problem to purchase a battery for my Note 3. I'm very discouraged now to even try looking for one. Thanks for your reply though!

When I started looking for a replacement battery I think the note 2 had been discontinued for about a year (I actually found it in a T-Mobile store stuck off in a corner) you should be able to still find a note 3 battery plenty of online stores, Amazon, Newegg, Fry's electronics. It might take a little hunting but you should be able to find one.
If you're planning to keep your note 3 a new battery could extend your phone life through 2018 and into 2019.
Thanks for that tip! I have been checking around, but the batteries I've seen displayed don't look like mine or offer the same specs as mine does, although they are supposed to be for a Note 3. I'm attaching a photo of my Samsung battery.

Interesting development. My wife works as supervisor for a call center. About two years ago the company she works for decided her department should be in charge of tracking mobile devices. The company began issuing phones back in the mid 90's. Flip phones, bricks along with pagers.
So over the last twenty something odd years, the company has gone through numerous changes, switch carriers several times. About a year before the company decided my wife's department would be responsible for the mobile devices. The company switch from using blackberries to note devices. Alot of people weren't happy with the note phones (the choices were a note 3 or 4, the note 5 hadn't come out yet.) Several people remained with blackberries and others somehow got iPhones. My wife was issued a note 4. Okay flashforward to this week. An employee retired this week. She came to the call center to turn in her company issued phone which was an iPhone 6+. Along with the iPhone, she turned in a first edition blackberry, an old LG flip phone and a brand spanking new note 3. Well technically not brand new since it's close to 4 years old. It was going to be recycled or trashed However my wife decided to take it and use it so our foster son can Skype with his biological mother. The employee a lady , turned the phone on once, didn't like it thought it was a bit bulky, turned it off and stuck it in a cabinet in her office.
