BBC News - BBC to survey UK mobile coverage

in partnership with the BBC, network analysis firm Epitiro have released an app on the marketplace (UK 3G SURVEY) which tracks your location and logs if you are connected to 2G or 3G.

I think its going to be a month long trial so the more users we can get on board the better the map will be.

I know the app drains the battery a little quicker because the gps is on most of the time but its a price im willing to pay if it highlights how poor this country's 3g network really is.

Please get on board and support this project and maybe then VODAFONE, O2, ORANGE/TMOBILE, THREE, will invest more of our monthly directdebits on its infrastructure.

Many thanks.

No, I don't think I will thank you very much. I get very good 3G coverage where I live, so it would be pointless for me to take part.
Also, isn't it about time the BBC scrapped the license fee instead of wasting my money on pointless projects such as this.

I don't care what the 3g is like where I live as I have broadband.
When I travel around my providers map seems very inaccurate and 3g is non existent outside of the largest towns,
so I will take part.

Congratulations, you're in a minority

What minority group do I belong to then? It can't be because I get good 3G coverage.

" Coverage is an issue that regulator Ofcom describes as a priority. It estimates that in terms of land mass, 91% of the UK has 2G coverage and 76% has 3G coverage."

That quote is taken from the article in the first post. So I belong to the 76% of people with 3G coverage. That's actually a majority.

Or maybe my objection to the BBC's license fee puts me in a minority? Paying

Can you provide another link for those coverage statistics?
They sound more like poulation coverage to me.
I feel sure land mass coverage will be much lower.
Have a look at ofcoms coverage map of Scotland. the coverage is mostly in the sea. Wales is little better.

thats the map I was looking at Ray.
It looks way less than 76% coverage to me.
Scotland is about 30% of the uk area and it looks like it has less than 10% coverage to me. England looks like it may have 76% coverage but not the UK.
Driving round the north of England and Scotland over the last year it dosent feel to have improved any.

I get poor 3G and 2G coverage but I'm not going to download this App. I am not happy that is it not harvesting personal data from my phone.

That's a good point. Can we trust the BBC and Epitiro with the information they are harvesting from our phones? What other things will they use the information for. Maybe I'm coming across as a bit of a conspiracy theorist but surely network providers already know how much coverage they provide. I can't see what the BBC and Epitiro can do once they've collected the data they need.

The privacy policy on the BBC web site is not particularly reassuring. I don't think you have to be a conspiracy theorist to question their use of the information.

With regards to the necessity of such a survey, given that the operators publish coverage maps, I would say that such a survey could be useful since I have often found the maps to be inaccurate.

It said my coverage is 2G only.
