Bedside Application for Android

Hey cracker -

I'd love to use bedside but I am also on 1.5.... I thought I read on the facebook fan page that you uploaded an apk of an older version for 1.5 users....Is this not the case?

Yes, but it wasn't working properly so I removed it, I was hoping manufacturers upgraded to 2.x soon :(

Awh :(

Bedside looks great but now I'm stuck using Kaloer Clock which is kinda meh....

sorry about that man, I wish I had thought all this manufacturers were going to take so long when I recoded Bedside 3.0... manufacturers really need to get working on updating Android to the latest current version.

Hi! Have you considered releasing your app also somewhere else then just on the android market? I'm really desperate for your application but here in Singapore there are no paid apps in the market. I'm getting so desperate as of thinking to root my new nexus one just so I can install the market enabler to fake teh country. Feels really silly just so I can pay for your app :|

Anyway; if there is any other way for me to buy your app please let me know. Thank you!

Unfortunately, other unnamed markets don't work as well as Google's, so I stopped working with them, sorry about that.

Please email me at velazcod+android[at]gmail.com, I'll explain it to you a little further.

I just pushed ANOTHER update to the market with bugfixes.

  • Icons change colors as well now
  • Fixed problem when connecting with auto-lock while on landscape (lock screen loop)
  • Now Bedside exits correctly when undock (Droid users with a dock)

Ok, now back to work on 3.1, I promise this time I will hurry, lately I've been busy with work as well as trying to fix issues without killing functionality for users on 1.6 (very painful process)

Any of you guys with a ROOTED Nexus One or Motorola Droid?

If you want to disable the top or bottom LED(s) because it bothers you at night, now you can do so while the phone is docked or connected to power (or even manually), go to the market and download "LEDs Hack", I published it a few days ago but I've been polishing it, works well, disables the LEDs automatically, and can be used along with Bedside.

Direct Market Link: http://bit.ly/5xIKTf (free)

Again, it only works for users with ROOTED phones, this is a hack, not an official fix, which can't be done because the SDK doesn't allow this kind of changes, but for non-rooted users, this issue thread is open and you should go in a vote and/or comment for the issue to be fixed soon...

Also, I won't include this within Bedside because it's only for users with rooted phones, which is a minority. Wish I had a solution for the majority... :(

Just downloaded the Bedside app and there are some really cool functions! My touchscreen seems to be less sensitive when its running for some reason. I can't always get the lamp button on for example. Also the TTS long press rarely works. I also notice Bedside does not get along well with the apps "vibrate mode by force" or "RingGuard".
I can't wait for the 3.1 with SMS whitelist to come out, as this was my primary reason for downloading the app! Some ideas for consideration in future updates include:

-Enable the light meter to adjust backlight settings so I can read the clock during the day, and when I turn off the lights at night, the screen dims!

-Built in alarm feature that displays the alarm time(s) active on the screen of Bedside. (like clock 2.1)

Thanks for a great APP!

- SMS/Calls Whitelists will be enabled in 3.1, currently they work, but I disabled it because I need to make it compatible for both 1.6 and 2.x, and I haven't been able to do that yet, coming in 3.1.

- Not being compatible with other sound profile apps will hopefully be fixed in 3.1 as well because I'm upgrading the background service. It will also allow for scheduled settings and also a widget to override the schedule and manually start the background service (silencing everything, and filtering calls/sms).

- I have a way to enable the light sensor, and it's by disabling the current brightness setting in the app. If you have the "automatic brightness" setup in your settings, disabling the brightness override will use the light sensor instead, so for the next update I will put an option to turn off the option of Bedside setting the brightness.

- Built-in alarm, I'm looking into this, I don't want to implement a built-in alarm but instead I want to integrate the stock alarm with Bedside so it only shows the next alarm, but I'm not sure about this yet, I'll probably leave this for after 3.1. I already have too many stuff in 3.1, including weather.

So yes, hopefully almost all of your concerns will be fixed in 3.1 except for the built-in clock, but I'll keep working hard at it.

Thanks!

I just purchased this app, and I'm liking it so far. The only thing I feel is really missing is a message displaying the next alarm time (or better yet, the amount of time until the next alarm will sound). I had been using NightWatch, which is a relatively unremarkable application, but it does integrate exactly the way you described with the stock alarm, which is great. If you added this type of functionality BedSide would be even better, and I'm excited to see that you are working on just such a thing.

Looking forward to seeing the weather included too!

I noticed this as well at first. It seems as though you have to press on the lamp image itself (as in on a white line in the graphic) and for some reason this seems exceptionally tricky. It mostly works fine, but I thought my screen was less sensitive as well. Perhaps it should be more of a button?

Thank you, I will most definitely look into implementing the stock alarm with it. The only problem I can see, and I have to test against, is the different phones having different builds of alarm, not sure if the alarm databases are all the same or at least similar, but I'll look into it.

Everything else should be working as is, including weather.

And yes, the icons being unresponsive, it has happened to me as well several times but to be honest I really didn't give it that much importance since nobody has mentioned it before, but I really should fix that.

Thanks guys

Great News! I can't wait...btw the LED hack works great after the update. Is it now a system file that would still work after an unroot, or do we need to be rooted for it to work? I know I had to stay rooted with the original version, but now I notice there is an icon in the message bar for Ledhack. Thanks for great aps!

yes sir, "unfortunately" that LED Hack app only works on rooted phones. it is a hack, a dirty hack, it works well, but it's not officially supported (why google? why!?). and that is exactly the reason why I didn't implement it within Bedside but as a separate App instead. However, it does work great along with Bedside, and you can also set it to auto-turnoff the leds when connected to power or docked.

Question. Firstly, I love bedside. Great app, I just downloaded it today. One feature I would love to see is the ability to see notifications on the app when in nighttime mode - or even perhaps just an option to make the top notification bar always visible? Just was thinking, would be a great feature to see if anyone needs attention just by glancing over at my phone!

I can't really put all the notifications showing within Bedside, only the "officially supported" like SMS/MMS and maybe missed calls (I can check on this, not sure).

What I can do though, is have the notification bar always visible, if you go to settings->style, there's an option there that says "Show notification bar". Now, it will only show when on the "day mode" brightness setting (using the lightbulb), but not in the "night mode".

The reason why I did it this way was because the notification bar is very light gray, and it is too bright at night, so I didn't think anyone would want that but I could definitely put a setting to always show that notification bar.

Thanks.

Oh yeah, all I was thinking was missed calls and SMS probably. However, I'm sure always displaying the notification bar would work? You're right that it would be a nice bright bar on the phone though

Ok, I'll do my best to implement missed calls as well ;)

very strange, if you hit the "lights on" button they don't come back on? how about a reboot?

what rom are you running it on? I'd understand if it doesn't work in certain roms since the "LEDs Hack" app changes settings like directly in the drivers... if the rom hacker changes some files around that I need to edit it might have problems with my app. I usually recommend doing a nandroid backup before trying the app just in case.

At this moment, I know that it works on roms that are based on the official rom, since the files are where they need to be.

If you try the nexus settings I don't think it'll work, even if the rom you are using is based on the nexus firmware, you can go ahead and try it though.

Let me know about the rom, and some results,

thanks

I've noticed the LEDhack disables the notification LED even though the in the settings I have the top LED not selected. something I am overlooking? :D

this is the rom i'm using [Themed ROM] Smoked Glass w/ White Clock - Droid Forum - Verizon Droid & the Motorola Droid Forum the nexus setting doesn't help
lights on doesn't turn them back on...reboot does

oddly enough after the reboot it seems to be working fine. i rebooted before, then played with the settings and it wouldn't work right again...so after the reboot and not even opening the program it's working great....so i guess i just won't open it again since it's working lol

Figured it out! The settings have to be turned off after the lights on button is pressed. If the lights off button is pressed, and then the selection unchecked, it wont work.

That's correct, that seems like a bug it should re-enable the LEDs while ignoring those settings.

P.S. sorry about the delay to respond!!

so the app is working correctly now? what do you mean you won't open it again? please explain I got a little confused there.

Any chance this will work with the new dock in the future? Would be cool to just set it down on the contacts, and have bedside start right up. It looks like the dock starts the clock app by default, so not sure if there is a way around that.
