What country & carrier are you from?
Kitkat is more to do with under the hood improvements. There should be some speed improvements, better battery management etc. The notification icons will change to white. Now you'll be able to have immersive mode in apps that allow it.

You know when you're watching a video on the youtube app or on the stock video player and the buttons disappear so the video utilises the whole screen? Now with Kitkat, this can be used in games & other apps (provided that the developer implements it).

Nice. How has battery management improved? I've seen a couple reports that battery has drained faster with KitKat.

I don't know some people report the battery is a little better but if there is a drain it's best to do a factor reset (its recommended to do this anyway after an OS upgrade).

Do I have to update, or can I just leave that notification in the notification bar forever since it can't be cleared?

I think you can open it then choose the option to download it later which should get rid of the notification.
