Before Rooting - How Do I Back Up My Calendar?

section30

Newbie
I'm ready to give it a shot but:

I'm using 1.56 and the calendar originally supplied with the phone (the HTC one?). For some reason Google won't sync with any of my historical calendar entries that I have on the phone (and I have a lot!). Google does pick up my contact list though, so those are saved.

Now, all this got me thinking "how can I backup my calendar" for obvious reasons even before I root? I went to the Sprint store to ask about calendar backup only and they were no help; the person there said I must use a different calender, which should import the data from the one on the phone, and THEN I can export to something that will save my entries......he suggested "Business Pro Calendar".

Searching here and xda = no luck for my question. I am assuming the calendar entry info must be stored somewhere on my phone in a file on the SD card? Is Titanium Backup the answer?

Is all this really complicated or am I missing something so simple that's it's obvious to others but not me?!

I never had a problem with calendar backup. It just always has done it for me. As long as your phone is synced with you gmail account, it should back up your calendar no matter what app or widget you are using. Double check that everything is syncing with menu>settings>accounts&sync.

That's the problem! I can't get my Hero to actually sync my phone calendar to Google. When I force a sync, the rotating arrow symbol pops up on the phone, but when I go to Gmail to check the calendar..nothing!

To make things clear; I'm not sure if it helps.

If I add an entry into Google Calendar from my computer, it shows up on the phone, but not the other way around.

I'm using: Calendar for Android v 1.00.0079.1.56.651.2 HTC Application (came with phone)

It sounds like you're using the stock sense still. I would A) Root your phone, B) Flash a custom ROM, C) Do neither, buy a new phone, watch your google calendar sync up and never have a problem again. The Hero is not new by any means and needs all the help it can get to stay functional. If it syncs one way and not the other, then it could likely be the widget itself that is having the issue. Mine has always worked though and I'm not an expert by any means, so take what I say with a grain of sugar. :)

Yes, I want to root and have all my other stuff backed up (pictures, music, contacts, etc.) even before I start the root process.

My unease is that if I root and flash a custom ROM, will I lose my calendar entries in the stock HTC one?! That's all I trying to ascertain.

Thanks for your suggestions.

OK, there must be a file that the program uses to store the data. Maybe a simple database of some sort? I'm not a software guy, so any help here appreciated!

The worse case scenario is that you would have to restore your Nandroid in the event that all of your calendar entries were lost. In that case, you would restore back and then they would still be there backed up in that Nandroid.

So, you really can not lose all of your calendar entries, as long as you do a Nandroid backup before flashing a new ROM. The fact that it is not syncing to your Google account is perplexing though.

I think I have it partially figured out:

  1. Reason for not syncing: when I originally set up the calendar I selected "My Calendar" as the save option. Changing that to my "Google email address" solves the problem for current and future entries, but not the historical ones though. So I'm still looking for a solution to that. I can go the old, reliable pencil in my $2 book or re-enter everything into Google calendar. I think I'll choose the latter since any new ROM calendar or equivalent app will (should?) pick that up.
  2. I'd like to find a solution to avoid all that though...lol. That's why I'm trying to find the file where all this info is stored. Even a C&P is easier then typing it all in.
  3. I am happy to know that when I do the back up all is not lost, but to manually enter everything will be a real PITA!

You may have to manually enter all of that information back in. I do not think you can directly access an internal file to copy and paste it in.

I am glad you at least figured out why it was not syncing in the first place. You will definitely want to allow Google Calendar to sync up so that if you ever flash a new ROM it will be synched back to your handset.
