Root Benefits of rooting

I just got this phone and I'm loving it! I don't feel like I need to root it as I feel that it does everything I need it to do. Can you give me examples of why you feel you need to root it?

Customization - Can do this through Launcher pro without rooting
Tethering/ hotspot - does it without rooting
Overclocking/ Underclocking - don't feel I need to do this as I feel the phone is fast enough and the battery duration good enough ( I think Tmo found the sweet spot here)
removing bloatware - this is tempting, but I'm doing a good job of ignoring them. Do removing them by rooting make the phone go faster or is it just removing them for the sake of removing them?
Stock Android ROMs - I don't see the benefit of stock android. I like the myModes feature and themes and I like the HTC widgets. And besides, you have Launcher pro.

If I had the ability to duplicate HTC widgets, mymodes - I would prefer stock and would have bought Nexus S instead. Although I like the 4G and physical buttons, so it is still a tough decision

Well there are multiple third party apps that duplicate HTC Sense widgets. Mymodes is a simplified version of tasker without customization. Also just because you root doesn't mean you have to get rid of the stock ROM and go to vanilla android. The Ice Glacier ROM is a modified version of the MT4G's stock ROM that runs way faster without even overclocking. It has all the features still but also you then have the ability to remove bloatware and such (frees up space and kind of increases speed because some of the "bloatware" constantly runs in the background no matter what). Also you can tether/hotspot for FREE after rooting.

Also I should say while rooting has its advantages it doesn't come without cost. There is a very real chance, although slim, that you can brick your phone. This means that you will lose everything and that T-Mobile and HTC will laugh at you and charge for a new phone when you try to return it. Rooting also voids your warranty so same thing. If anyone on this forum decides to root their phone they really need to read up on the methods required to do so and make sure they feel comfortable. It's not terribly hard for me to do but I don't know the technical skill of other people so I won't tell you to go out and do it.

If you're perfectly happy with your phone then keep it that way. HTC has a pretty good track record so far with supporting their phones past a couple months *cough*SAMSUNG*cough*. No matter what you decide to do have fun everyone and Merry Christmahannukwanzakah!

so the main benefits of rooting are free tethering and ability to overclock your processor? Are there any other benefits? My phone is the optimus t and I like to download apps and music.

I feel the same way with my phone. There are other reasons to root but it all comes down to your personal interests. Changing roms, launchers, widgets, etc. are what most people do.

I was fine with everything until Rovio started using full-screen ads in Angry Birds. Then, not only that, they changed the location of the in-game ads to be more in the way. I couldn't deal with it any more, so I rooted to install Adfree.
