Rooting allow modify system (read and write) simple means administrators control. After got root create a 2nd partition on your SD card and install "Link2SD" app and move all the large apps to SD 2nd partition.

To be honest if you are not quite sure of the benefits and dangers then I'd read up a little more to be aware of what you are getting yourself into either side of things. I root but know why I do it and accept the consequences if things go wrong. Your best tool is information on this decision. Read the recommended threads.
