Best 4G Speeds?

Out of curiosity what is the best speed test you have gotten on 4G using your EVO?

I've noticed there is a dramatic difference between the EVO and Clear/Sprint cards used at the same location. EVO 4G radio is just garbage in comparison.

This past week in Salt Lake City Clear seems to have changed something. I've been getting 6,000kbps-7,000kbps tests consistently. My friends Sprint Overdrive on the other hand seems to get 25%-30% better in almost every test, regardless of where we are at.

Is about 6,800kbps the limit for the EVO? Has anyone consistently gotten better?

The highest downstream I have gotten is 10.9Mbps (can never quite hit 11 but can consistently get 10.6 to 10.9 from work), that is running custom ROM overclocked, at normal clock speeds it ranges from 8-9Mbps ... these tests are from a stationary location with low but stable 4G signal strength. While in the car and moving, it can range quite a bit (as expected), anywhere from 2 to 8Mbps and somewhat random.

Before on Android 2.1, I would see max 6.5Mbps with stock kernel, and about 7.5Mbps with custom kernel, so it does seem that part of the speed is being limited by the CPU load and other OS factors.

Update: Ran a fresh speedtest from work, was able to get up to 11.6mbit. Not that it makes much difference, but now I can say it goes to eleven in my best Nigel Tufnel voice.
 
Which test are you guys using. There's been reports that the speedtest.net app is inaccurate. I've been using the Xtremelabs app for testing.

On 4G I usually get around 3, sometimes 4 or 6 and almost hit 7 once. But I rarely turn it on as well as most 4G is only available while I drive.
 
I have found speedtest.net to be pretty accurate for me. I also have xtremelabs and fcc test as well. When i think one is not working right i try the others.
 
Just ran the Speakeasy Test off the LA Server. Got 9.14/.97 Mbps.
Thats with 2 4G Bars about a mile away from the tower by Anaheim Stadium.

Have seen it as high as 12.5/1.1 Mbps since I figured out I have a 4G signal a few weeks ago here at work. Thanks to this board I turned the damn thing on to see if the rumors were true about it being on here in Anaheim/Orange. Its been on continues and strong every day.

Its very sweet indeed. Blazing fast. Love my phone.
 
i was headed to six flags about 3 weeks ago and bypassed a small town out somewhere in NJ..they had wimax out there so i turned on my radio as we drove around in the car and ran a speed test..i was impressed as i got 10.5MBPS down with 1.7MBPS up...but then last weekend i was in a starbucks on 42nd street in New york..i tested their wifi network and got a result of 36mbps down and .97mbps up..of course this was over wifi but i knew that had to be some bug as the download test lasted for about 5-7 secs for the download part..but upload only took 2 sec before it claimed it finished...the wifi was branded as AT&T...weird it was indeed
 
Ok, so before we go down this road, the 4g radio in the evo is capped at 10mbps. 10mbps is a hardware cap that can not be hack, modded, or changed( for many, many, many, reasons). There is no way to get higher then 10mbps. If you are getting 10.5 or even 11.+ you are probably using the speedtest.net app, which is broken in most cases. If you think you are getting higher then 10mbps please use only the browser to do the test and clear all history in the browser before the test. Then post the results here. Now the op. The sprint card/chips/pucks, do not have to run a 3g/4g/blue-tooth, and complete phone for 20+ hours. Which means that all the battery life is focused just on 4g use. Card/pc chips/pucks are also allow a lot more radiation to escape because they are not typically held to the face. Having only to run 4g for 3-6 hours, and more radiation leakage allows radio to operate at 10mhz to 20mhz on 2 or more radios allowing greater speed.

I don't recall seeing anything hardware cap on the radio... I know the 1mbit upload cap is on their end, and the 6mbit cap for some of the Clear internet plans are on their end as well, not saying it doesn't exist just news to me. And just in case, I just ran a speedtest from the android browser and still get similar results:

Thats the same Speed test I use with my browser. Have heard its very accurate. I get over 12Mbps frequently. Normally its right around 10Mbps.
 
I would like to expand this topic to include Hotspot download speeds.
I live in Baltimore, WiMax signal strength ranges between -63 and -68 dBm. I have achieved peaks in the 9+ mbps range but they are rare indeed.

Average tower to device speeds mid afternoon are 6+ mbps while average Hotspot speeds for the same time come in at 4+ mbps.

Evening tower to device speeds come in at 3.5 mbps while Hotspot speeds for the same time come in at 1.75 mbps.

There is no appreciable difference in Hotspot speed between wireless or tethered connections.

Any ideas on where the missing bandwidth went?

These numbers are determined by:
Using Speedtest.net on Evo and laptop, same server.
Test evo, then test laptop, then test Evo, then laptop, and so on for 25+ test on each.
Toss the highest and lowest two speed test results on Evo and laptop.
Obtain the average of the remaining test results.
 
I just moved from a place where I'd get 8-10 mbps 90% of the time. Lowest it would go would be 6.5 mbps.

Moved 10 miles away and no 4G here :( *sigh*
 
I'm in NYC (Manhattan) and I've tested several times. The highest was yesterday when I got 5.5MBs down.

Compared to you guys, that's not very fast. I hope that's not a sign of how far things are moving along here in NYC 4G-wise. Although I see a fella above posted from Queens and got a good rate.

Is there a source for that? The chip's data sheet shows maximum throughput at 40Mbps (UL+DL), although that is obviously going to vary depending on the rest of the hardware the chip is integrated with. But I don't see where a 10mbit hardware cap comes in, the biggest limitation I have seen so far is CPU, which improved quite a bit in Android 2.2. (After going to 2.2 I saw speed gains of about 3mbps). I have tested on a few different servers, and have gotten as high as 12.5mbps. While I can understand certain tests and/or servers having potentially incorrect results, I can consistently get over 10mbit through various servers and test platforms/sites. (And I also used servers that I tested on my home connection and come up accurate within 1% for the 60mbit home connection.)
 
Not even going to go there. I work with wimax every day. I have pushed the evo to the max, it will max out at 10.1mbps. It can get a peak at 15mbps, but only for a few seconds. Which is why you may be getting a connection of more then 10mbps. The test you are conducting is downloading a very small file and is doing it to quickly for the test to be fully time the connection speed. Not saying you are not getting that as a test speed, but it is completely abnormal ( I have ten evos, everyone will start to downturn speed at 6mbps everyone).
