Best Android Phone ATM???

dunc1n

Newbie
Hi folks,

I am due an upgrade for a new phone on my contract today, but I dont know what phone to go for. I currently have the HTC Hero and I am wanting another Android phone.
Could someone point me in the right direction as to what to go for? I am pretty much looking for the best out there at the moment. After reading up on the web it seems to be the HTC Desire HD, but I know this phone is a little old and Im scared that if I sign up to this one, then a new one will come out in a months time or something.
Should I just go for this one or is there any that are coming out pretty soon that i should hold out for??

Thanks in Advance

Old?

It was launched in October and even still in the UK at least there have been supply issues. I've only just got mine through T-Mobile (EE).

I haven't use any other Android phones, so I can't really comment although I picked this phone because it has been consistenly reviewed in better light than the other smartphones on the market.

It was either going to be this phone or a BB Torch or 9800.

Nexus S is the best android phone so far. With this phone you become the newest android updates directly from google

The best android phone atm is the phone that best meets your needs. The best thing to do is shop around find a few that you like then get opinions on them. I'm sure you will get plenty of responses of yea the galaxy s is the best, the nexus s is the best, the desire is the best, and so on and so forth. But most of the answers you get will be from fanboys, look at the device they have after reading their answer. So just find what you like then do some research. :D

As always with these types of threads, OP needs to qualify what "best" means by providing needs/wants -- including the carrier the OP is going to use. Otherwise this thread just becomes fanboys promoting their favorite devices. If we know what the OP is looking for we can provide meaningful suggestions.

If a single device was the absolute best everyone would be using it. In the real world best is always highly subject no matter what the topic is.

Hi-

This is my first post. TIA for any help.

I dropped my N1 yesterday and was talking to T-Mobile to get a jump on the contract extension for a new Ns as I ran to Best Buy in a panic-induced hysteria to get a replacement phone as soon as humanly possible, when I found out that I'm not eligible for a renewal and discount yet because only 2 out of my 3 lines are out of contract and month-to-month and the contract on the 3rd line expires in September, and blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. At the end of the call they always say, "Thank you for being a T-Mobile customer for the past seven years". Some tangible appreciation would be nice. But, I guess rules are rules.

Since I had a moment to think, I was able to forestall the impulse-purchase and decided to take a look at other phones before I spend (another) $700 without a contract on the Ns with all the accessories, bells, whistles, and an extra-strong, Val-proof case ;). I have been browsing the features and reviews, but need some help deciding.

About me:
-Google is my life
-I loved the N1
-I spend all day on the Net
-I rooted/modded the N1 (Cyanogenmod)
-I like "convenience" apps
-I don't game
-I don't listen to music
-I want to stream movies / vids

So, Ns, G2, MT, or some other one? Does anyone have any recommendations?

Thanks a lot,

Val

Val,
TMO has been super good to me in the past. Now, I live in the US, and am assuming you are in New York. If that is the case, I would give them a call again, be polite (not saying you weren't, but we can all get a little huffy when something like this happens) and explain your situation. While I haven't had this situation before, I was having reception issues in my house when I moved. They willingly gave me a TMO hotspot router that I could make wifi calls over. Worked great... when it worked, but the service often dropped off. After a few calls, they stated that since I had been a great customer, always paid on time (etc. etc.), they would willingly just terminate my contract, if that is what i was seeking. I told them that it seemed that there isn't much else they can do for me, and happily accepted. IME, their customer service has always been great, it's just the reception that, for me, has always been borderline unusable. I know my situation was different, but the point is that they may be willing to help you out if you give it a couple tries. Perhaps they won't give you a free phone, or an early upgrade, but they might be willing to knock a coulple hundred off your purchase price for you.

bellator7...

you like to stream movies... you would like a bigger screen.
all the other stuff.. can be done on any size screen.

what is the biggest screen android on tmobile right now?
I think that is the Galaxy S phone.. NS or Vibrant. 4" screen

but the Mytouch4g has the front facing camera. 3.8" screen.

Your choice of phones suggest non US. UK perhaps.

Yes, there are always new ones that come out. And a new one after that. You just have to make a decision and bit it. The cost of waiting is the lost productivity during this "waiting" time when you should have been enjoying and benefiting from the new phone.

Having said that, the Desire HD is a very good choice. Another one I might suggest which might be available in the UK now or soon is the Nexus S.

bellator7... you like to stream movies...
Thanks Dan. More to think about.

EDIT: Another couple of questions if I may:

1. Does anyone know if other phones are able to be integrated with Google as seamlessly as the "Google Phones", i.e., the N1 and NS?

2. Anyone know if the glass on my N1 is fixable for a reasonable fee?

Thanks again.

I dunno specifically for your phone but I was in galaxy s support on twitter and someone asked for a captivate and it was $175.

i think LCD screens are cheaper to fix.

I also think.. most phone integrate google to android very easy. I have read that HTC Sense does it very very well.

Definatly really happy with my DHD. Got it about a week ago, upgrade from Legend (loved it just not powerful enough).

Was out of nexus s and desire hd. Few reasons I chose DHD was

1. expandable memory, want to upgrade from 16 to 32 later (deal breaker)
2. build quality, owned multiple samsung produces (phones, washing machine, tv dvd player) all had something wrong with them.
3. big screen
4. cheaper plan

if just want phone 16gig enough nexus s would be awesome.
