Root Best app to overclock eris

Pilot2

Newbie
Assuming a rooted ERIS with an upgraded ROM, which of the Apps that allows you to adjust overclocking works best?

Excuse my newbeness, BUT, did you use SETCPU to adjust the clock speed within the ROM and then you no longer needed SETCPU or...?

That's correct. Depending on the rom. The rom's I have on Eris's in my Sig both support clock speed adjustment. The max most Eris's can run comfortably is 710mhz.

Some of the Eris dev ROMs have overclocking tweaks available from the built-in user menus, e.g. some of the CM (CyanogenMod) derived mods.

Many of the later Eris dev ROMs were pre-configured to be OC'ed to 710 Mhz, which is a decent compromise between performance and battery life, and almost all Eris phones seemed to be stable when clocked at that max frequency. (A good % of Eris phones will crash before they get to 810 Mhz)

SetCPU is the most capable of the apps, as it allows you to create different min/max CPU speed profiles depending on battery charge level or temperature. This allows you to stretch battery life by reducing the clocking as the battery charge % goes down, and also create failsafe conditions so you don't fry your phone with too much heat.

Conap's CPUBoost app also works (but is much simpler), and you can also find overclocking controls in other apps such as Advanced Memory Killer.

Note that the apparent performance you get out of the phone depends on three things:

- the min/max cpu speeds you set
- the choice of "rate governor" algorithm you choose
- the kernel's choice of scheduler algorithm

The last one can only be changed by flashing a new kernel; the second one (governor) controls the method that decides when and how often different CPU clock speeds between min and max (inclusive) are utilized - so it lies at the very heart of the "performance vs. battery life" tradeoff. These are the "smartass", "userspace", "interactive", "ondemand", and "performance" governors.

What I can say about the governors is this: don't use the performance governor except under limited testing conditions, and even then you should be using a thermal clamp profile with setCPU (or CPUBoost) to prevent cooking your phone to death. As for the other governors, I'm not sure if I can tell much of a difference between them - I tend to use the interactive governor.

Note that as with "default overclocking speed", different Eris ROM cooks had different opinions about which governor should be used as the boot-up default.

cheers
