You shouldn't have to open it as a zip or extract anything, period. If your browser isn't downloading it and leaving it as .apk, then your browser settings are messed up.

GoWalla - Now available in the Market. Cool GPS application with check-ins and trips and passports. Sort of a social networking site. iPhone people get it too, so the amount of users can be pretty large. Cool and fun and free.

I download SlideIt and it is truly excellent. It allows me to keep the droid closed and vertical when entering texts or emails. Great options.

Thanks,

CW

QwikList - voice list widget
Simple Weight Recorder - on diet...
SportsTap - pretty sure this wasn't mentioned before.
Tetrads - addictive time killer.
CardioTrainer

While I like the idea of a "best apps" thread to get ideas for apps, the problem with a thread like this is that if you're looking for something specific, ie. the best email, you have to read through the whole thread (which can grow to be many many pages). Even when "searching" the thread, you still have to read through multiple posts.

Wouldn't it be easier/more useful to have a "Best X App" thread, etc. A thread for each app category (Email, ToDo, Notes, GPS, whatever...) so that the original poster can always update the first post with a summary of the apps others have posted in subsequent posts? That way anyone looking for the "best email app" only needs to read the top post of the thread, or at the very least know that the whole thread will be about email apps, instead of having to scan each post for mention of an email app?

I read the majority of these apps and I am very satisfied with the ones I have tried, so THANKS for the posts. I have a couple to add myself that I find helpful if not awesome.

Google Voice - the official google voice app for Android phones. I use it because I now have a registered number AND my Verizon number and its free visual voicemail (verizon makes you pay monthly for theirs). Right now Google Voice is by subscription only but it will become mainstream soon enough. It is totally worth it!
Handcent SMS - is a GODSEND for messageing (SMS and MMS). It is full customizable with downloadable themes as well.
eBuddy - My personal favorite IM app. It integrates all of the popular (and some underground) IM programs - MSN, GChat, AIM, Facebook, Yahoo, Hyves and ICQ.
Seesmic - My personal favorite Twitter app. Nuff said
Last.fm - Pretty much like Pandora, but the widget for Last.fm is the best I've seen. Last.fm is a little behind pandora but I have it linked to my Xbox Live account and I am a fan of the integration.
WeatherWidget - In my ever searching quest to find the Nexus One Weather app for my Droid, I have come across this one and you can link it to what ever weather service you want (app has to be downloaded i.e. The Weather Channel, AccuWeather...) Four different sizes for your screen and very clean.

Hope this helps! Happy Apping

The only one I have that hasn't been mentioned is Car Dock v2.

CAP201003172342.jpg

Launches when place in the dock, home button returns to the app when in the dock, icons are customizable and has 4 screens even though I only use one. Screenshot is showing the icon's I used instead of the default app icons.

How did you change the icons for the app? I have this set up on my phone too and it just has the enlarged (and distorted) versions of the apps original icon.

Launchpad - Your favorite/most used apps easily accessible from the notification bar

Easymoney - Manage your finances and budgets on the go - MUST have to get me away from being tied to the computer with Quicken

ToMarket - The BEST shopping app available (almost as good as HandyShopper for Palm)

Bar Control - favorite apps in the notification bar

SWYPE! (sorry, I had to say it even though it's already been said. I just tried it for the first time)

GDE Home - Home replacement

Word Up! - Very addictive game

Touchdown - Mail and calendar app for Exchange

here are some of my favorites

GMOTE - Control computer via bluetooth/wifi from droid

CAR LOCATOR - stores car location, gps / turn by turn back to car

BEAM READER - views pdf files on phone

HOME ++ - home replacement

PDA NET - allows tethering via usb/bluetooth w/o rooting

NESOID - NES emulator, also makes SNES, gameboy advance, SEGA, etc.

MUST HAVE!

MOBILE DEFENSE - free app that allows users to track phone if lost/stolen from any computer. allows you to lock the phone, send a message, track, and set off a password protected alarm

Look out - tracks lost phone, anti virus and backs up contacts/pics. I like it better than Mobile Defense ( I did see this in the Market, search for defense).

Everyone should have appbrain if they're reading this topic ;)

Appbrain market sync - allows you to sync your installed apps with appbrain.com. Use appbrain.com to search the market, make lists of apps (I have a list of interesting apps found in topics like this), and select apps to install/unistall from your Droid. Sync from the Droid, and any apps marked for installation or deletion are taken care of...sweet!

Tripit - excellent travel aggregator - send your email confirmations from flights, hotels, etc, and it's all in one place, and can be synced to your google calendar

Mileage - simply program to track fillups & mileage on the car. Has stats and graphs. Graphs not easy on the eye, but if you're just looking to view mileage stats, this is for you - aCar is nicer looking, but much too complex for this simple task.

MOBILE DEFENSE - free app that allows users to track phone if lost/stolen from any computer. allows you to lock the phone, send a message, track, and set off a password protected alarm

Can't find this one, is this the exact spelling?

that is the right spelling, if you cant find it try "Mobile Defense (BETA)"
