If your phone is not rooted the above tools (especially MyBackup Pro imho) are good but if it is rooted, nothing shall beat Titanium Backup.
You can backup/restore all your apps (even protected ones) plus their data, their market links and your phone's data. What's more to say ? Oh yeah: the free version is Unlimited !
For that "price" you also get batch backup/restore and a zero-click app uninstaller. There is also a Donator's version which adds a zero-click installer - can re-install your 200 apps (with their data !) in the background, all by itself...
Oh wait - did I mention that it rocks ?

Tried MyBackupPlus - made backup of all apps and all data. Hard reset and re-installed from backup and all my icons and homescreens ended up VERY corrupted. So much so that HTC Sense kept forcing close and I ended up hard resetting again!
Apps don't need backing up as they are easy enough to re-install from the Market. Data such as calendar and contacts are backuped up anyway. The thing that I really wanted to be backup up, the "look and feel" was the one thing that never managed to be restored correctly.

Brykins, I beg to differ. With 300 apps installed, I may not be the average person, but even if you have few of them, they all have their own settings & data and no unified way of backing them up. So I think having a backup tool capable of doing all this, is a great timesaver.
Just a concrete example: today a new version of Dolphin Browser came out, so I upgraded. Well tough luck: it's a broken version. So I simply fired up Titanium Backup and downgraded Dolphin to the previous version, without losing my bookmarks and saved passwords.
Without Titanium I would have had to switch browsers (and not access my stuff) until the problem is resolved, say, next week. See the difference ?

What does Titanium backup rooted that MyBackup doesn't backup? I've got a rooted phone and am looking at both your apps. But in the future I might change my build and thus 'un-root' my phone.

Hi Guys,, new droid user, been lurking here a couple of weeks..
I read in another post that astro file manager will also backup all your apps, but they lose their sync with the app store? so when new versions are available you won't have the upgrade option. is that an issue with mybackup pro?
I am currently on stock 1.5 rom, but am thinking of trying out the newest 2.1 leak that is out this week and am concerned about all the paid apps I have being "lost"

Last time I looked, Titanium Backup was the only one to backup protected apps, all apps' data and all apps' Market links without problems. And I just added support for Cyanogen's "new apps2sd" method in CyanogenMod 5.0.5+ ROMs.
To be honest, I have heard about MyBackup Pro supposedly having added "root features" very recently, but it is very vague, and have never tried it. I would be glad if someone here could elaborate on that.
And finally, if you "un-root" your ROM, then indeed, Titanium Backup can't do anything then

First of all: to preserve the "Market links", you need to be rooted. There's no way around it.
Then, the free version of Titanium Backup will do that for sure. Maybe they added similar functionality in the latest versions of MyBackup Pro, but I have no precise information on that. I don't know if MyBackup Pro would backup your protected apps either.
Objectively, if you spend $5 on something to backup your apps, Titanium has more functionality. You can keep several backups for each app, and much more. But if you need to backup stuff online, or backup just your phone data, MyBackup Pro is more user-friendly and more suited to that.
If someone tried the latest MyBackup Pro, please post more info... Thanks !
The information about paid apps is supposed to remain in your Google account, so in principle you could install the apps again after wiping your phone, without paying again.
But I have read that it didn't work for some people. Maybe Google has resolved it - I don't know.
If I were you, I would go the safe route: quickly root your phone and backup everything before going further. You can also do a Nandroid backup (in recovery mode), which will have the advantage of saving your whole ROM, in case you are not happy with the new one.

Can't get it at the mom (vodafone NL is down *again*) but does Sprite Backup provide backup to SD card or to remote servers only? Will it work on my non-rooted cupcake?

Yes we support 1.5 onwards, non-rooted.
Infact we are the solution OEM's are embedding for devices, as rooting will create serious attack points (for large scale deployment).
We provide backup to,
1. Device (in the rare case u don't have an SD... don't laugh, we have had a few customers)
2. SD Card, we backup content to a secure image, can include copies of your photos/video etc also if you want a roll back point to copy to your PC/Linux/Mac
3. Online. We have partnered with Box.net. I think Dropbox is out in next week etc. That way you get 1 or more gig (not a couple of meg) of backup with awesome online companies that provide high SLA (availability of your backup), have a plan to backup their servers (if there was an 'act of god'), real service levels, real protection (virus/intrusion), have millions of online users accessing essential files daily, don't have your data on some shared cheap online server plan (ie they spend millions developing real cloud solutions) and above all are very cool Sprite Partners (in the same Spirit as our Sprite Mobile founders).

Well yes, a wipe does remove all user & system data from the phone's internal memory, so then you can only restore stuff that you did back up to your SD card (using Titanium Backup or other tools) beforehand
