Best browser

I can't use xScope until it actually starts to remember my history. Right now, it uses the history from the stock browser, which apparently is a "feature" and is fine if you've been using the stock browser since day 1. But since I haven't used the stock browser, xScope won't remember websites for me. Big problem imo

??? It remembers my history just fine...
Just start using xScope, so it remembers your history? (Are you saying that it will only import your history from the stock browser? Or that you're having problems getting it to store your history - period?)

If I type in abcdefg.com, xscope won't remember it at all. Everything works fine in the stock browser though. I have to retype the entire url every time in xscope. Doesn't matter if I wipe my rom or reinstall the app.

I used the stock browser for a while. When Opera Mini 6 got released, I tried it out and never looked back. Opera Mini is just really fast. It doesn't have Flash support, but I find I don't really miss it. If I really need Flash, I'd just use Opera Mobile or the stock browser. It's been several weeks since I viewed a Flash video on my phone and that was just to try it out. The vidoes load using the YouTube player.

My choice has always been Opera Mobile. :)

+1 on this too especially now that it has flash and the hardware acceleration works great. If would be perfect if only I can figure out how to make it automatically zoom when loading a new page rather zoom out to show the whole page.

For those former/prospective skyfire users. Search "skyfire 2.3.3 apk" All the video playing none of the social media garbage. basically skyfire when it was good. I have the apk on my sd card and it has worked with all the phones I have put it on

The advantage Dolphin HD has over other browsers for me is that, when you resize the text, the text is reformatted to fit the screen, so that you don't need to scroll sideways to read full sentences. Do any of the other browsers do this?

Dolphin HD is the best one.
- display tabs on the top -> it is very easy to toggle between tabs.
- gesture controls
- add ons

I think most browsers do that. Certainly the three I use -- stock, Boat Browser, and Firefox -- all do. (Firefox has a configuration setting for it that I think is "off" by default, but it works fine when you turn it on.)

Opera Mobile does this as well.

for those that tried but didn't like dolphin hd as much before (xscope pro was my go-to), the latest 5.+ version of dolphin hd is pretty good. it's my go-to browser now.

i have a feeling that i'll probably switch again as the devs improve their version.

Opera Mobile is head and shoulders above any other phone browsers I've used. I'll never switch again.

After all these kind of suggestions in this thread, I downloaded Opera Mini and gave it a shot. My usual browser is Dolphin Mini, for comparison.

Some observations:

  1. For some websites, the layout is not correct on Opera Mini. I've never had this problem with Dolphin Mini. In particular, one forum I go to automatically loads a mobile skinned version of the forum which is easy to use. On Opera, I get a mangled more-traditional "text only" mobile site, not the skinned version. I have to click a link to activate the skin, and then it still just doesn't look right.
  2. Speed... I don't see much difference honestly. Possibly because I'm not in a Western country (not sure where Opera's servers are located), so I don't get any faster connection to Opera's server than to the website directly.
  3. Battery usage: Used Opera for 5 minutes, and it showed up as using 2% of my battery (phone on 10 hours, so 2% of the battery that my phone used in 10 hours was from 5 minutes with Opera browser...WTF! I've never seen Dolphin Mini show up in battery life.
  4. Tabs - Just a personal preference, but I like seeing the tabs that I have open (like in Dolphin at the top of the screen) and not having to press a button to see what tabs I have and switch to them. I use tabs a lot, and it's an extra tap everytime.

Looks like I'm going back to Dolphin.

Dolphin Mini is unbeatable in most ways, but it'd be basically flawless if they allowed you to skin the ugly bright green (for the Mini vers)

Is Dolphin Mini like Opera Mini where they have servers go out, grab the page, re-format it and send it to the browser?

I was a big Opera Mini fan on my last winmo phone where pages on traditional browsers took forever to render, but with these new, powerful phones, I really see no need for that type of browser anymore, unless maybe I'm somewhere stuck on a 1x connection.

I always found that things like dropdown boxes and menu selections that used javascript (which are common) never worked right on opera mini.

On winmo/old phone it was worth the tradeoff. On a fast android phone, no longer worth the tradeoff.

i've read that opera mobile and firefox were going to take advantage of the local device's GPU (or something like that) to increase the speed of the browser. last time i tried them, which was a few months ago, neither had that functioning or functioning very well to see any noticeable speed differences than dolphin.

No, Dolphin mini is just a stripped down version of dolphin HD. No server side compression.
So then what's the benefit of Dolphin mini over HD on a fast phone? Faster to open? Does it really load pages faster?

What are the negatives then of mini over HD? Javascript? Flash?

I certainly notice the difference between the stock browser and Opera Mini. Mini is just faster and for the web sites that I frequent, it works very well. Opera Mobile is a bit slower like the stock browser. On the occasion where I need Flash I would use Opera Mobile, but that doesn't happen often enough for me to change the default to Opera Mobile.

My phone is an HTC Desire Z. Perhaps if I had one of the newer phones, I would not notice the difference. Right now, I do notice that Opera Mini is faster for me.

I haven't tried Dolphin. I was using Opera Mini on my old Nokia N97 (which really needed the speed boost). I'm used to Opera Mini, so have no incentive to start trying out other browsers at this time.

The server-side compression applies to only Opera Mini, not Opera Mobile. Opera Mobile is just a normal browser and thus doesn't load pages any more quickly than Dolphin does.

In my experience, Dolphin Mini is less resource-intensive, so if you have an older phone (like the original MyTouch 3G, which I used to have), it'll actually function and not be deadly slow. If you have a decent and recent phone with more than 192 MB of RAM, just use Dolphin HD--no real benefit for you in using Dolphin Mini.

Dolphin Mini is the one I currently use the most. I used to use it on the Eris because it ran well on a relatively older phone, but I still use on the Thunderbolt because it's just a well-put together browsing experience.

I haven't checked out xscope in awhile though. I should install it again and see what's new and improved.
