Best buy = oxymoronic

I really feel bad for all these brick and mortar stores going under. I shudder at the thought of a world where we won't have any left.

In an ideal world, customers would buy from these stores to support them and the jobs they create, and stores would have good service and reasonable prices.

too bad we don't live in one. our loyalty is where the cheapest prices are. and people complain about china. customers created that.

Best Buy's biggest problem of all: Geek Squad

Not so much a problem as it is blatant fraud. Geek Squad may be the single best argument advocating that Best Buy should go out of business.

From what I understand, GS was a legitimate honest well run business before it was purchased by BB and turned into a bilk the computer illiterate machine.

Consumers will always search out cheap prices, that's human nature. Some people do values service and if there is enough need (profit), someone will provide it. Big box stores (almost) never have good service. They trade service for selection and price. I don't feel sorry for their plight at all. They crushed the little guys, replacing higher paying skilled positions with low paying unskilled ones. Now they are in being crushed intern by the internet guys with lower overhead still. I think (hope) as the big boxes die off, there should be a place in the market once again for the smaller local service oriented guys that the big boxes once all but killed off.

all i am going to say is i refuse to go to a Menards and need a GPS to find the pliers and light bulbs when a ten mile trip will land me at a nice small old Do-It Center with it in plain sight....and i'm not even that old. i just got spoiled by my great grandfather.

the city may have the big boxes, but older stores still exist. Wetzel's and Foodland is now IGA, most using the same old buildings and providing the same service but the name has changed. Do-It Centers are still common, you just have to drive off the beaten path. i do like it better, less traffic, and no hold ups at the checkout lanes. i never did understand why Wal-Mart even builds 12 checkout lanes but only has like two open at a time. seems stupid...

i may not be as old as my great grandfather but i am old enough to remember when Wal-Mart was no larger than a Waldenbooks.

Next time I am at my local best buy, I will try to grab a shot of their computer section... All that extra space they have, they could have more demo units, since they can order the stuff for you.

They did have a chrome book. One. A couple other computers, but it looks empty.

Our had the chrome book last time I went in, with a sales rep standing right next to it the whole time.

I wanted to check it out, but I'll do it on my time and don't want a rep standing right there trying to tell me about it.

Well, I got a little story to tell you all, RE: best buy.

Yesterday I was in a larger one, looking up something for an experiment, they had more stock, in a different location, but someone actually offered to help me in the place! After I got the info, I was still in debate mode, had my sister call the closer one to see if they had what I was looking for because I had other stuff to do and was still thinking about stuff. She made the call to the local one (they know us in there) and I came in a couple hours later, still unsure.

At the local store, just two people working there, both helping people, but at least they acknowledged us. I mean, it was cool it took them awhile, they where paying customers and I was still undecided.

A short time later, got into a chat with one of the guys, actually helping from another department. He gave me undivided attention, answered my questions, spent the time to help me, and as a result, I bought something.

Impressive.

Today, a bit more impressive, I had another guy attempt to help me, I inquired about a laptop, Asus Q200e best buy special, I had been looking at it for a bit, and when this new guy came up to help me, I flat told him probably not because the technical question I had if it was possible to boot from a USB stick with Linux on it due to secure boot. He had no idea, told me I could return it, and to google it. I explained it was a bit hard to do since the laptop was a best buy exclusive, and I done so already.

This was okay, I suspected most people would just buy it it use as is anyway.

Then the guy that helped me with last night, helped me again after I came back from doing something else elsewhere. More standup service from the guy.

So, I made him go to the cage to get a different box since the one out looked like it was opened, and no problem. I get home, open the box for the laptop, pull it out, press power, and nothing. I figured it would have at least a little battery.

Plug it in, get set up and start having some head scratching issues, first it kept saying my password I was trying to create did not match. Finally after about 6 attempts it got it to match. Then captcha kept saying I was putting in the wrong phrase. Did this at least 8 times.

Never mind the fact I had to set up (yet another!) account for microsoft even before I could use the thing. Now it was having issues. Nevertheless, I get it to work. It loads things up, dumps the homescreen. First thing I see is my apps window up and a bunch of `````````````````````````````````````` in the search line. I escape, load up explorer, go to google because, lets face it, I am not using bing, it pops up asking if I want to install google search to the home screen. I tell it yes, then something happens, not sure what, but next thing I know, my screen is white. I press the windows key, it goes back to the main window, then pops up the search with `````````````````````````
then escape then ```````````````````````` then I hit escape then ````````````````````` then I escape, close the thing down, pack it up and return the thing less then 2 hours after I bought it!

I hate making returns.

So, I get this cute girl helping me, she pulls the thing out, I suspect it is not going to make the same behavior there as it did for me. She powers it up and the thing wants a password and I am like !??@$@!

The password I had to set up is a mix of upper, lower case, numbers and symbols, I had set it up like 30 min prior to returning it because of the ``````````````````` problem and I did not exactly remember it.

So now, I am standing there feeling like a total idiot returning something I can't quite remember the password on. Before I could try what I think it was, she says no problem, shuts it off stating they can do a restore on it, then gets my ID and does the return.

Pretty painless.

On the way out, I tell the guy that helped me earlier that I just returned the thing, and he was ready to help me select something else or exchange. I told him this basically ruined me on windows and the lower end devices.

Still, I got to give them props for customer service, something they had been lacking the last few times I had been in there. A new girl there, clearly was interested in working and offered to help while we were browsing.

When you need something right now, and/or can't count on the sales staff to know precisely what you want, there's no substitute for a place to go and buy things.

It would be one thing if Best Buy stores charged outrageous prices and showed indifference to their customers. (That's what high-end audio boutiques are for! :p) But that's not the case, with rare exceptions. Sure their stock is limited compared to what I can find on the Internet. And sometimes the prices are just as good. The best part is that I don't have to deal with the capricious FedEx delivery system! And that's priceless.

quite honestly i never had salesmen bug me while browsing there, in fact, i had a hard time actually *getting* a person to assist me at all when i was there to get my iPad 3. i had to flag one down at the register, then wait another ten minutes so they could find someone *authorized* to unlock the cabinet! it was a lot like Wal-Mart shopping. never anyone around when you need them
