Root Best custom rom for Samsung droid charge

Hello Friends,
I am tired of how slow my droid charge has become especially while using GPS so I decided to try to install a custom rom. Which one is the best, I have heard of TweakStock and Eclipse? I believe cyanogenmod is not available for droid charge. The process to install a custom rom seems to be pretty tedious involving Odin, ClockWorkMod etc. If I install a custom rom will I lose all my data like contacts, music, installed apps etc.

A good resource can be found here:

http://www.toms-world.org/android/index.html

First, I would suggest you back up what you can to both your SD card and your PC in case anything should go wrong. More on backups later.

Then, follow the instructions in the above link to root your phone, but keep the stock ROM. Then download Root Explorer and Titanium Backup (free or paid). The Backup tool will let you backup all your critical data *and* your applications to SD card fairly easily. It will make the restore process (see below) go much easier as well.

Part of the process of rooting, you will download CWM (Clockwork Mod). After the above, go ahead and make a recovery image of your phone using CWM (instructions easily found on the internet).

After doing all this, then go ahead and find a custom ROM that you like; the link above suggests Tweakstock (which I have), but Eclipse is pretty good as well. I would stay away from any others that you might find. Then you use CWM (or Odin) to install the custom ROM. The process of installing the ROM usually requires you to delete all data, so all your apps and data will get deleted. What happens then is that you download the free version of Titanium from the app store, and use it to restore your backup from the SD card; voila, all your apps and data are on your newly ROM'ed phone.

In addition to the ROM, you may also want to upgrade the kernel (again, info contained in the link above).

It's not as scary as it sounds, but it can take a while, and you don't want to take any shortcuts; doing the backups is an absolute must.

Unfortunately, before I read your post I did follow the instruction in this video Updated FP1 Samsung Droid Charge Rooting - Keep Data by: KDtech.co - YouTube and How To: ROOT your Droid Charge. I was able to root my device but then I used ROM Manager to install TweakStock 1.4. Something went wrong and later on from your page I learnt that ROM Manager should never be used for Droid Charge. Now when I reboot in CWM recovery it gives me only a few options like reboot, wipe data, wipe cache and install from zip but none of the other options like advanced etc. I downloaded eclispe 2.0 for FP1 and booting into recovery mode and installing from zip isn't working. The screen is stuck with a yellow exclamation within a white triangle and a green android icon. Not sure what to do. I did do a backup with ROM Manager but I think that failed too. I believe I will have to now restore it to a FP1 build and then try the whole process again?

I have gone back to stock 2.6.34.7-FP1. I want to install TweakStock but the TweakStock rom says it is EP4D. Is it wise to install a custom rom of EP4D over FP1. Isn't FP1 a higher version than EP4D?

Yes it is. For what it's worth the 2.0 version (named Tweaked instead of Tweakstock) is FP1H - you may want to look at that one.

You never want to install an EP4D ROM over an FP1 radio, or vice versa.

Both Tweakstock and Eclipse have FP1 ROMs, and it seems the newer versions are being maintained on FP1. Not sure there's really any reason to go back to EP4D at this point.

In the above mentioned link, the owner of the site says he's bailing on the charge and has deleted all info he has for it, nice huh? He says it's because verizon no longer supports it and no longer sells new ones, which is odd since I was in the verizon store today and they had new ones for sale. Go figure.

I am working right now on collecting up everything for everyone to download at will. Any suggestions on hosting? I would like to store everything for free for everyone so we can all keep using our charge.

PS - never ever use any ROM manager or like software as the droid charge will freak out.

Oh well, that link *was* a good resource. I must admit it's a pretty lame excuse, and not very forthright, given that he also had Samsung Galaxy information up on his sight as well. There was some good info that is sometimes hard to get out of the various forums and sub-forums.

Anyway, Google search is your friend in these cases. Just take care that any instructions you see specifically mention Droid Charge and *don't* suggest using ROM manager.

EDIT: For those looking for details on Charge ROMs, please see the following links:

http://eclipserom.com/vforum/forumdisplay.php?10-Samsung-Droid-Charge

Lots of good info in those links on ROMs, kernels, themes, etc. Contrary to idiotic claims made elsewhere, there is still an active community supporting Droid Charge.
