Root Best GB rom for the OG Droid??

Mrdroid921

Android Expert
Right now I am on Pete's stock GB rom, and it seems like battery drains very fast and I have a few other bugs. While I wait for him to come out with GPA15, I wanted to know what other GB rom you guys think is the best?

thanks.

I've been having lots of fun with CM7. Solid stuff, despite the fact that GB wasn't really intended to run on the OG Droid.
Haven't had any FC or disappearing app issues, though I admittedly don't run a ton of stuff in the background.
Note: I'm using Chevy's GB 1GHz kernel.

How is that memory wise, and battery wise?

I've been running Liquid for the past couple days now. I like it...running very well so far. Not long enough to get an idea of overall battery life yet. Seems a little heavy on the battery so far, though. I might reset my bat stat's since I haven't done it for awhile.

Anyway, in my opinion Liquid is better than Elite 5.2 so far. I have a feeling that CM7 will be at least as good or better.

I tried giving Pete's GPA14 a shot, and all looked good until I got a phone call - I couldn't hear the caller and they couldn't hear me. This happened two more times and again with an outgoing call. Since I was not intending to use it long term, I quickly went back to Ultimate Droid, which I had been using for about 2 months.

I like Ultimate Droid, but started having Wifi problems with 3.2.5. This may be because I have flashed without wiping since 3.0.0, 3.0.1, 3.1.0, 3.1.1, 3.2.0... but if the fix was to wipe and reflash, I was going to try a different ROM (since I would wipe anyway).

Now I'm using Chevy's SS 5.2. The only problem I'm aware of is that the unthemed version locks into landscape mode when in the car dock (there's a fix for the themed version).

Not being familiar with how the kernel ties into the rest of the ROM, I'm a little mode comfortable knowing that the kernel is from the ROM developer. I know this probably means nothing, but...

It is in the ROM sub forum under this one. Latest version is 1.6

Most of the popular ROMs (Chevy, Liquid, Ultimate Droid and CM) are close in battery life and memory. I have been switchig between them for months. Most have different features, so you can try them out and decide which you like best.

Chevy's latest has been the fastest and smoothest on my Droid, but as we have seen, all Droids are not alike.

Make sure you do a Nandrod backup before you flash any of these just in case.

Liquid for sure. I couldn't get a GB rom to run on hubby's OG until I tried Liquid. On mine, CM7 seemed to work more or less but I had a real problem with push emails, notifications, etc. and I finally got tired of it. I probably will try CM7 when/if they come out with an actual release, but until then I'm happy on Liquid.

Liquid has run the best on my Droid. I still think 1.3 was the most solid but haven't had too many issues with 1.6. To be honest I haven't tried CM 7, but all previous CM releases blew on my Droid while others said it was the best since sliced bread. There's too many hardware variations to say what is best other than what runs best on your own hardware.

Indeed. The *BEST* ROM is the one that you use and find fits your tastes, and personal usage best.

<-- My personal fave.

I agree with ya. Different droids like different rom's. Mine liked both liquid and the latest from Peter Alfonso. Liquid just better fulfilled what I wanted.

I am partial to CM7 RC4. I have also tried Simply Stunning, and liked it too, but I've stuck with CM for a very long time. It is reliable, fast, pretty good battery (chevy 1.2g kernal), and sufficiently customizable.

The basic problem here is the same thing that I and others have posted numerous times every time there has been a major or minor system change.

The ROM *you* like is going to be up to you. There is no best ROM for the DROID - your usage patterns are going to be different from mine, your app installs are going to be different from mine, the hardware is even going to be different (not from a manufacturing POV, but from an assembly line POV, where not every piece of hardware is identical - some will CPUs OC more easily, some some will not, etc.).

It is a fallacy to ask which is the best - but the responses here are still within reason, as long as you realize that each person responding is giving you an opinion, not fact - even if it is factual information they are presenting, in terms of battery life and / or speed, you have to realize , it is factual information for their phone ONLY.

Very few responders here can say they have used the exact same install on multiple OG DROIDs, and among those who do, I'll bet not more than 2 can say they have used the exact same install on more than 5 DROIDs in their possession.

What works for you may not work for someone else, and what works for them may not work for you.

Since most ROMs can be customized one way or another, your best bet is to play around with ROMs yourself. In the GB class, I've only used Cm7 nightlies, since the OG DROID is hurting for RAM, and I do a lot with my phone that is *not* gaming related. It's stable, and mostly works - but again, I don't game, but I do a lot of other things on the phone.

The one thing I have found that is awful is the heat when I use navigation - it overheats almost incessantly (thanks to my dock being in the windshield b/c my new truck has no way for me to place it where it is viewable and still out of direct sunlight, and I live in the South). But, since I have to OC in order to really run GB at all, I have to suffer until I can get a new device that will run GB more easily.

HTH

I was wondering if you were ever going to post around here again, John. I would have posted something like you said, but for me it has seemed to be a waste of time as these threads will always come up once the last one drops off the front page . . lol.

[off topic]I have had the heat issue while using nav the whole time I've had my A855. I mount in the windshield as well and I live in the NW. I've played with everything, SetCPU profiles (the 'slow down' when hot just makes nav go wonky), all kinds of things. It _might_ be since nav just is a hog. I don't know about you, but if I'm using Nav, I had better have my phone charging as well, otherwise it dies very quickly. I try using the POS non OEM battery I got a 'deal' on and use my defrost without heat, that's about the best I can do. And then even the POS battery will stop charging at a certain point, uggh![/off topic]

I know there is no "best" ROM and it's a matter of personal taste, and I know that I'm way out of line posting in such an old thread.

But I suspect that there are a few of us that are still trying to get a bit more mileage out of our OG Droids while waiting for the right upgrade (e.g. ICS Razr Maxx with higher resolution screen and unlocked bootloader -- I can dream). But in holding onto the OG Droid, I've been really frustrated at the sad state of available stable ROM's.

Here's my take (note that all four of these ROM's had full data wipes and resets before installing):

CM 7.1 and CM 7.2 RC1: Extremely slow, takes forever to redraw Home. Very flexible and configurable, but nearly unusably slow. Didn't see any obvious advantages of 7.2 RC1 over 7.1. Also ran into frequent problems with the ADW Launcher action button icons getting corrupted (saw this on both 7.1 and 7.2 RC1).

Liquid Smooth 3.0 (could never find a good download for 3.2): Faster than CM, but unreliable, things didn't work. Would frequently hang when trying to answer phone or make calls. Not reliable enough to be usable, although I tried for about a month to make it work.

ChevyNo1's Simply Stunning 5.6: Just installed it today, so I may need to edit this posting with more thoughts later. But I am totally blown away by how much faster this ROM is that either CM7 or Liquid. WAY faster. Also, everything seems to work. Very impressed so far. BTW, I avoided the option to use the ADW Launcher due to my problems with CM7, and used the other default Launcher instead. I do miss the configurable action buttons, but I'll take speed and stability over configurability any day.
