Help best gps settings ?

I can't find the thread where folks had commented on how they optimized their GPS on their Maxx.


What setting do you use that work best on Smart Actions and Google Navigate?
 
Leave stand alone GPS on, and the others off. navigation will turn the GPS on automatically and off when not needed.
 
Leave all the gps settings on, there's no reason to turn off verizon location or Google location, as a matter of fact some apps require it. Try turning all 3 on and see.

Leaving gps on won't drain your battery, as it only uses battery when an app needs gps
 
I guess the only app I'm having problems with is the Smart Actions. It can't find my location when I'm trying to add an action.

The navigator works fine, so that's good.

I just did a factory reset and forgot how I had the gps settings that were required to get Smart Actions to work. I loved how it would know when I was at work to reduce volumes.

I know this does you absolutely no good right now, but maybe in the future. Anywho, I take a screen shot of settings menu's, and such, and keep them on an SD card, so when I have to perform a factory reset, I bring the images up on my computer, and can cross reference settings that way. My memory is pretty crappy when it comes to things like this, so I need all the help I can get. :o

It was suggested in another forum to use the free app called "GPS Test" in the app store to optomize your GPS. Running the app allows you to clear the GPS Cache and re-sync satellites.
I run it about once a week and it seems to make a difference.
Other than that, I keep all other GPS settings active. IIRC, the two that make the biggest difference are the "Standalone GPS" which uses the GPS chip in the phone and "VZW Location services" which (supposedly) uses cellular triangulation and aGPS to lock on quicker.
Also, earlier versions of Smart Actions apparently used WiFi to activate/deactivate certain settings but the newest version uses GPS as well. IMHO, if you are in a building and can't get a good GPS signal, then the aGPS more or less does the job. Its less accurate than the standalone but gives a reasonable proximity.
Finally... and call me crazy... but I also think using a hard case on my Maxx affects GPS somewhat. I use the OEM Verizon belt holster with the hard shell on my Maxx and it seems whenever I do, battery life declines somewhat and the culprit is the GPS.

There are numerous complaints about Smart Actions not detecting 'my location'. It's always been a problem for me, but the complaints seem to have increased since the latest update to Smart Actions.
There doesn't seem to be any answer to the issue that I can find. I stopped using location based Smart Actions because they never did work correctly.

Good to know, why is it I always feel better when it's not just me.
 
Using Smart Actions location-based programs requires (for some stupid reason) that your phone be able to connect to a wifi as well. I found this out the hard way when I tried to create a SA that shut my phone's ringer off when I got to work based on location. But since I don't have wifi that I can connect to at work it would not function.

Now I use Tasker which allows me to write simple programs that do the same things as Smart Actions using GPS locations without wifi access and it works great. I don't know why Smart Actions can't do the same. I still like Smart Actions and use them for many things but if I need something based only on GPS location it's Tasker.

I also keep all three GPS functions enabled at all times. It doesn't use any extra battery and even if it did, that's why we have the MAXX!!!
 
Yeah. Smart Actions uses known wifi locations to do location based rules, not gps. You would have to keep wifi on all day which would drain batter so it's not even worth it
 
I keep the Wifi on all day and have a smart action for home. Basically if it detects my home Wifi, it activates the smart action which turns off data, bluetooth and GPS.

I found what really drains the battery, with Wifi on, is that it alerts you when protected and/or unprotected networks are found. I have both notifications turned off so that only networks that I've connected to, and set to remember (connect automatically?). It uses the same amount of battery as with having Wifi turned off for the day. At least that's my observation.

I have the same settings, not for battery savings, but to stop the annoying notifications.

I've never found any battery drain, perhaps I've accidentally set things that way anyway.
