Best IM app that doesn't kill the battery???

Okay - so I'm an IM addict, and while eBuddy is great, I cannot leave it running in the background as it kills my battery... is there another app that is a good IM program that is more gentle on the battery and allows the phone to sleep?

I cannot understand why developers don't allow the phone to go into a sleep state, using IM to wake it up and reactivate the IM application, much like PDAApps Verichat used to do....

Any help appreciated!

Have you tried meebo, not sure if it kills battery life but seems pretty fast.

Meebo will let the phone sleep and wake it up on message. It's pretty smooth, and will connect to almost any IM network you can name. Even facebook chat.
