What would be the best (Free) messaging app in the android market?

There are two contenders Handcent, and Chomp; both have vocal supporters - me I go with Handcent

I'm completely new to having a Droid. Does messaging act the same way as texting? Can I message anyone? Does it replace my texting plan?

Hi! I'd like to welcome both of you to the Android Forums! To the 1st question, I prefer handcent. To the 2nd, yes, messaging is the exact same thing as texting.

Do you know if I can drop my verizon text package by using this? Or do all the people I text have to use it too?
