Root Best Method to Root DX??

DeV8eer

Lurker
I recently purchased Droid X with a broken digitizer. It was in the previous owners pocket during a motorcycle crash. I replaced the digitizer and after reassembly discovered the Home, Back and Search hard buttons did not work. Thinking that the button pad had also been damaged I replaced the button pad/ribbon cable. Well, that still did not fix them. It’s possible the ribbon cable from the digitizer that the key pad cable attaches to is faulty. I’ll figure that out later.
I want to use all this phones capabilities except for using it as a telephone. I would like to remove the bloat overhead and be able to install and remove apps at will.
What I am hoping that someone can help me with is to explain the steps I need to take to be able to install the Button Savior App so I can use this phone. I have tried to read and understand what steps I need to take, to install a root App such as this. I have tried to understand this process as given on several sites around the web; but it is difficult when I have to stop often and figure out what the entire ‘insider’ lingo means. This makes it difficult to keep on track. I have some programing background and can follow instructions. Can someone please post a link or directly describe what I need to do.

Edit:
I tried the sticky thread here [How To] Root 2.3.4/4.5.621 with magic md5 (does not require Milestone SBF) , and I could boot from the CD, get the phone into bootloader, try to execute..., nothing would ever happen.

Here’s the “About phone” Info:
Firmware V1.1
System Version 4.5.621.mb810
Android Version 2.3.4
Baseband Version BP_C_01.09.15P
Kernel Version 2.6.32.9-g1282440
Build Number 5.5.1_57_DX8-51
ERI Version 5
PRL Version 52826
CDMA – EvDo rev. A

I am waiting to attempt rooting until after I make another try to get the hard-keys working. I think the replacement digitizers ribbon cable or the connector on it for the button keys is defective The guy who sold me the digitizer is sending me another and I'll replace the first one.

Thanks for the replies, I'm still going to try rooting this phone when I get time.

The replacement digitizer I installed either had a bad ribbon cable or connector for the Hard-Keys ribbon cable. The vendor sent me another digitizer and all the buttons are now working :).

Now that I can easily access the phones features and settings I want to root it to get rid of the bloat and useless (to me) Bleeping-Bleep.

I want to thank those who replied here and sent PM's to try and help me.

The results of and methods used to root the DX will be posted here.

Also, I'm sure I'll be back looking for additional suggestions and help on making the most of this device once I have control of it.

When I downloaded and created a Bootable CD from here: http://androidforums.com/droid-x-all-things-root/603489-how-root-2-3-4-4-5-621-magic-md5-does-not-require-milestone-sbf.html I thought I had followed the directions. After trying, "MotorolaOneClickRoot", I realized I did not remember putting the phone into, "usb debugging mode"...Duh. Booted from the CD and re-ran magic md5, and IT WORKED!

Now I will be doing a lot of reading to figure out what to do now that I am in control of this phone. From what I have already read, I think my first action will be to install Titanium Backup.

If anyone has time, I would appreciate suggestions as to what to do next. I hope to figure out how to make this rooted system the one that is used as a "Restore" if I totally screw things up.

Last thought, "If all else fails, READ THE INSTRUCTIONS: AGAIN!
