Best ROM for a beginner

Just got into this. Managed to root phone and have the siyah on ICS. Now just wondering if there is a good ROM for me that is easy to install. GPS is important to me as I do Fell Walking and Geocaching so it needs to be good. I do a bit of tethering too. And the usual other stuff including email and that. Any ideas would be great as would someone telling me that I have not a clue what I am on about!

Best bet would probably be a Samsung Rom....

Currently most popular on here is neat Rom, in particular the jelly bean version.

I've not had much need for the GPS but in general it seems to be working really well with the siyah beta kernel.

Other option would be to go for one of the ics neat Rom versions....think uhlpz was the latest, if you are in the UK, then the xwlpy May be a better option.

It's mainly about trial and error though :-)
 
thanks. I will go and see what I can find out about those 2. Oh, now I am rooted does that mean that I could put on jelly bean?

It is very wise to admit you don't have a clue, however I think you do yourself down. Clearly if you have managed to Root your stock ICS you have at least a grasp of what your doing.

I thoroughly recommend the various "dummies guides" for various topics, they taught me what I know from scatch. Yes the threads are pretty long, but a thorough understanding of what you are doing can be had from them. Reading them will answer many of your questions and possibly save you a lot of angst avoiding pit falls.

As for JB yes you can flash it, be aware that ICS kernels will not work with JB and that Samsung have yet to release an official JB ROM fof the SGS2. What we currently have is a leaked stock version that works well and several "cooked" versions of it (the best being Neat, IMHO) along with more "exotic" versions ported and cooked for the SGS2. I recommend sticking to a Samsung stock based ROM.
 
Thanks very much for all that info. Could you just sort me on one starting point please? If ICS kernels do not work with JB. Do you have to get a new kernal first? Or get the JB first? I can't quite link into that bit as I can't work out in my head how it can be done!

When you flash a new ROM it replaces the kernel, so you'd install the ROM, then install a different kernel like Siyah if you wanted to after, though you don't necessarily have to.

Although what jeremy_inc has said is 100% correct, if you decide to flash the pure stock Samsung leak version of JB it will flash a stock un rooted kernel as well and you'll need to re root.

Also make sure you do a "full wipe" before flashing a new ROM and before you do anything do a Nandroid back up, a Titanium back up and an EFS back up. If you don't understand any part of that last sentence - don't flash until you do. The information is all here in the SGS2 forums, and while I may sound over cautious and fastidious I cannot emphasise enough that flashing can and has "bricked" many a phone, rendering them useless. While for warned and armed with understanding this is extremely unlikely.
