best route to ... amazon instant video on nook hd+

Android Enthusiast
I am a longtime android phone user, and bought the mother's day special $179 nook hd+ primarily since the 9" retina display is suitable for reading detailed journal articles. But I would also like to get amazon instant videos working, via adobe flash.

There seem to be three routes towards this goal:

  1. root and fiddle with different roms
  2. use a canned solution such as the $10 downloadable sd card from androidfornook.com. This seems especially attractive since i neednt modify my nook extensively
  3. install the sdk on a pc, including the relevant nook sdk components, and use adb to sideload the appropriate flash APK file

I would welcome opinions, especially from those who have amazon instant video working

I have N2A installed on my nook and am unable to watch amazon prime videos, it says that I need to install flash but it is not supported. I am sure that there is some way of doing it but not sure how.

I went to the flash archive, downloaded the most recent version for android 11.1.115.54 and was able to run Amazon video on Firefox. Thanks again for the tips.

Thanks ... I received my AFN card yesterday and hopefully will try Flash and Amazon Instant Video within the next day or two. Your success with a slightly different configuration is very encouraging.

Are you able to watch actual videos, or did you just get the error messages to go away?

I have had very little success with AFN which is now a Jelly Bean release. I tried many combinations of browsers and Flash releases. It was easy to make the flash errors go away, but I couldn't get any of them to actually play an amazon video.

Eventually I found that the Puffin browser, which has its own builtin Flash implementation, can show amazon videos under AFN. I encountered many audio sync problems, and was unable to display a full screen video.

I then rebooted to the native Nook HD+ environment, but found that Puffin is not compatible with this device.

My guess is that your environment works since you are running ICS rather than Jelly Bean.

On a semi-related topic, the Mother's Day Nook HD+ sale is now over, so I guess we won't have much company on this forum. Bummer ...

Let's hope people went out and bought some with the hopes of getting access to the play store and will breath some life into this forum

I was also hoping for a more robust forum with the great deal on these tablets, but apparently not. Maybe tinkerers weren't swayed by the great deals? Or already had Nexus devices?

Update: I tried it again yesterday, and Puffin is now available from the native Nook HD+ environment. Apparently the Puffin developers made a minor adjustment to permit this. I tried Amazon Instant Video, and it works. In fact, it works a bit better than in my AFN jellybean mode, since the latter uses the SD card rather than internal storage.

So there is now a good solution for partial-screen AIV on the Nook HD+. Free initially, and then a few dollars to buy the Puffin app.

Amazon Instant Video is finally available for most/many Android devices:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.amazon.mShop.android

such as my Motorola Photon Q phone. In turn, it downloads an app from the Amazon AppStore called "Instant Video".

But the app permissions (for the first app, let alone the second) aren't compatible with my Nook HD+, either in its native state or the rooted "AFN" state.

I'll try experimenting with various solutions to work around these restrictions, and report back if I find a solution. Anyone else with success or good ideas, please chime in!
