Best Sprint Android for me.

Alright everyone, please excuse the question, I'm sure it has been asked before and I have searched and read...but still want help.

I am gonna take the dive and switch from BB to Droid.

I do tons of texting...

use Outlook Exchange at work and gmail for home

I take pictures for posting to work website and facebook for work and home.

I love having my email pushed to my phone

I use sprint nav

I don't use the internet on my phone because it sux....but i would if it didn't suck

I use half a battery per day with my 8330.....

Thoughts on which phone I should get?

Leaning towards Nexus and Evo....

Thanks in advance, discuss.

If you are a blackberry convert you will want a keyboard, which means Evo shift or Samsung Epic. I would say that the shift will have a better battery life (still not what you will be used to, Androids EAT batteries.) The Epic has a gorgeous and bigger screen but Samsung is terrible with updates and phone issues. If you want to root, it is a moot point.

Also, in a couple months Sprint is set to release some bleeding edge phones. The Nexus (which is a google experience phone) and will receive very timely updates, and the Evo 3D. The Evo 3d is highly anticipated as it will be a dual core monster, supposedly with incredible battery life.

Go and play with them, if you aren't going to wait for the new phones. That is the best way to figure out what would work for you....

i think google mail is pushed to phone, there some that can be pushed too. most others are polled.. which you can set to every 5 mins or longer. battery is eatin faster for more frequent time intervals... i have mine set to 2 hrs.

battery is also a week area. depending on your need and use.

Android is not for everyone and BB users have a more difficult time switching because a BB does email and messaging so well.

You will need to make sure you keep the number of messages on the device to below 1,000. Over that and you can have memory issues. Keep them deleted and get one of the 4G phones as they have more internal memory.

use Outlook Exchange at work and gmail for home

How do you access Exchange? Exchange ActiveSync, Outlook Web Access or POP/IMAP? Evo will do ActiveSync and POP/IMAP though I recommend K9 Mail from the Market for POP/IMAP. No Outlook Web Access AFAIK.

I take pictures for posting to work website and facebook for work and home.

Are the pics for viewing on a computer? If so, any newer smartphone works.

I love having my email pushed to my phone

Only Gmail is "pushed". You will be disappointed in this coming from BB. It is one of the few trade-offs.

I use sprint nav

Get one of the bigger screens if this is important. Although coming from a BB they are all going to look better. If you get one of the phones with Android 2.2, Google Nav works better IMO.

I don't use the internet on my phone because it sux....but i would if it didn't suck

I think you mean the web. Yes, BB's suck when it comes to web though BB OS 6 is much better than 5. You will love the web on Android, especially with the higher end phones as they support Flash 10.1 (and 10.2 beta).

I use half a battery per day with my 8330.....

You may get half a day if you do not configure your Android right. BBs sip data compared to Androids gulping it. I get a full day easily. But I do not check mail every ten minutes either.

Leaning towards Nexus and Evo....

Either would be great. Wait for the Nexus and Evo 3D to come out and see if the Evo drops in price. May also want to consider the Evo Shift for the keyboard.

I would also point out that I came from a blackberry and got the Evo. I now prefer virtual keyboard over physical. So I wouldn't necessarily rule out the slab phones. The 4.3" screen makes typing a lot easier than on a small screen like an iPhone. Evo also now comes with Swype, which allows you to type (swipe) and not have to be so concise at hitting the keys.

If you are leaning toward Evo, I'd say wait a couple months and check out Evo 3D. Nexus looks pretty sweet too.

Battery life on any Android can be significantly improved from how they're configured out of the box. These forums have a wealth of info regarding battery tips.

Thank you very much for all the tips/tricks and advice.

I went to the store and played w/ the phones....WOW they are very very complex aren't they? I'm gonna take it slow and continue to go and play with them here and there when I'm in the area. I also played w/ a newer BB with 6.0 and it was a little better for sure, plus the screen is better etc. maybe I just need a new BB.....

I really do love the way it handles email...even though I sit at my desk most often and could really just "check" my email every now and then while i'm out.....

I know it will be a big change, I've read tons of other posts from BB users making the switch. Some have stayed switched, some have switched back. I really don't know what I'll do, but your advice has been very nice to have.

Sad thing is I just have an itch......Not sure why.....and boy they aren't cheap are they? i wish I was a new customer....

I remember back in the day.....loyal customers used to get rewarded w/ cheap phones....now it's only the new ones.

Thanks all...

I'm coming from a BB 8330 and have been 'researching' for months now. I think I will be fine with a virtual keyboard, now I'm just trying to decide between the Nexus S and the EVO 3D

I'd like to also throw in that Epic's screen is Gorilla Glass. Not completey indestructible, but it holds up to way more abuse than other phones. I keep mine completely naked, and I'm a rough on parts, and I still only have one or two teeeeny tiny scratches that are barely noticeable (so much so that I don't even know how I did it because I did not notice it right away). I have had my phone since Aug 31. Drop a BB on concrete and let me know how that works out for ya. ;)

AOL pushes, too, not just Gmail. Not sure about others. I have ymail, too, and I use an app for it.

I couldn't be happier with my Evo Shift. I started with the Evo, but it was too big for me. Battery life was also a major issue.

take full advantage of the 30-day to put the android device through it's paces. if you are part of the family plan and have ability to open a new line under it, try that first before the true switch. good luck. (i have a feeling you are going to hate the battery life of android, although, if you get one with gingerbread, it supposedly makes better use of the battery.)

I'm also a Blackberry soon-to-be switcher. Looking for a phone, planning on picking one up next week. I REALLY liked the Evo 3D until I saw it only had 4 GB internal. I know that you can add a 32 GB microsd card to it(which I'd probably be doing regardless of what phone I get) but I've got to say, I'm a bit disappointed to see that such a cutting edge phone only has 4 GB internal... Still beats the everliving tar out of my BB's 256 MB internal, but not what I'd like to see. :/

Also, I'm planning on getting a 3DS, while it'd be cool to share pictures between the 2 or whatever you'd do with 2 3D devices(3D picture of a 3D picture of a 3D picture, etc. etc. etc.? :P) I'm thinking that the 3DS will cover my stereoscopic needs. :P

I was hoping the Atrix would be released for Sprint by now, but it looks like there's no such luck. I went into Sprint a few weeks back and played with their display Evo and their display Evo Shift. Both looked pretty cool, but I prefer the original Evo. I'm still going to continue looking, as it looks like I might have to get a non-contracted phone. Wouldn't want to drop that much money on something I don't like.

The Nexus doesn't look too bad, but it doesn't really look AMAZING either. I'm thinking for the wait time involved, I'd rather go with a different phone. I'd stick it out for the Evo 3D if it weren't for the 4GB internal, as I said, seems rather small for such an otherwise amazing phone.

Yes there are a few phones with more internal memory than 4 gb... more is always better... if usable

But those that complain about it... don't really know what they are saying.

I have the og evo... it has only 1gb....
and 4gb will be more than enough.

90% of the non game Apps are less than 1mb!
And most can be loaded partially to the sdcard.

If you hit the ceiling with that.. you got way to may apps..
Music and photos go on the sdcard

Now that I think about it, you're probably right. I'm sure 4GB will be fine... As I previously said, my BB has 256 MB internal, I float by on that, so I'm sure that something with 16x the internal storage will be more than enough. I'm not sure how the apps compare in size between the iOS and the Android, but I assume from your statement that they're usually smaller. I have a 32 GB iPod Touch, and I have more than enough space on that, so I'm assuming that a 36 GB Android will be more than enough, even if only 4 GB of that is primary...

EDIT: Now the only issue for me is the wait... I'm getting money for one next week. I'm not exactly great at saving money...

EDIT 2: Just thought of something else. Something that I ADORE about my blackberry is the side keys. I have the one of the left set so all I have to do is press it and it opens my email/sms app. I noticed that the 3D doesn't have any quicklaunch buttons... That might not be a deal breaker for me, but I LOVE being able to just quickly and painlessly access my messages...

The EVO 3D (with Sense 3.0) will have a customizable lock screen that will launch any application you would like instantly without even unlocking the phone. So you can do the same thing... it will probably be even better (although that subjective, I guess).
Shown here at about the 50 second mark: YouTube - Another HTC EVO 3D hands-on with 3D gaming teaser (Splinter Cell)

Here is another good demo of the lockscreen in action:

Alright, I need this phone. Hopefully it won't cost an arm and a leg, but I'm not too optimistic about that...

I have a rooted Hero, and while it does what I need it to with custom Gingerbread, I'm constantly running out of internal storage. I have an upgrade and have always wanted the Evo. The Hero was my small step into Android, I realize now that I'm not really content with what i have compared to the options available.

The phones I've been looking at are of course the Evo, the Evo 3D, and the Nexus S. I know either one is a big leap compared to what I own as far as hardware is concerned, so which is the best option based on these aspects...

- I would like to be able to play games smoothly as this is basically impossible on the Hero.

- I want more internal storage than the Hero.

- Battery life isn't such a big deal to me since I'll more than likely purchase an extended battery anyway.

- I don't have to have the latest and greatest, I just want something that will last for a year or two. With developer support like we have now, these phones could last alot longer than we think.

- I really don't want to spend too much for it (honestly, if I find any of these phones on Amazon or something like that on sale, I'll probably just go with the cheapest one).

I know what I want, but I also know what I can live with. What do you guys think?

if you're a gamer then i would get the Epic 4G over the EVO, plus the pricing on the Epic is lower right now. i saw $149 on sprint site a couple days ago.

the nexus s has 16 gb internal and that's it, no external slot. hardware wise, it's similar to the Epic sans slider.

obviously, the EVO 3D will beat them all with the hardware and specs (not sure if it will have better screen than the SAMOLED on the samsungs), but you will pay a premium when it comes out.
