Best stereo headset with audio controls?

I have ben using a pair of $40 sony earbuds for the last year or so with my ipod and love the volume and track controls.

Using PowerAmp for my player I am able to advance tracks but still nothing in the way of volume control.

Is this an app issue or a hardware issue?

Any advice?
