Best Task Killing App

megaduff

Newbie
Hi all,

New to Android, not long got myself a Desire S and still finding my way around it!

Was just wondering if anyone had any advice about what the best task killing app was on the market? Want to make sure I'm not getting stung behind the scenes with apps/services that are still running and be able to close them down so does anyone have any preferences over applications or any good recommendations. Any help is greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

The best task manager is the one you don't have installed.

No need on Android the system will do a great job of managing memory on it's own.

Lots of threads on this if you want to read more.

By clever and cunning use of the "Search this Forum" button:-

Searching is nice, but not totally necessary :p.

But Megaduff, you don't need a task killer, they can actually do more harm than good. Ironass has given a load of useful links and there's even a pretty good vid on the main site (phandroid.com) which explains it quite well:

ANDROID PSA: Task Killers - UNINSTALL NOW!!! - YouTube

My Fascinate has been running HORRIBLY slow and locking up. Just installed Advanced Task Killer and its been running great. Perhaps I got a bad phone. Whenever I hold down the home buttong the stock task manager shows MULTIPLE apps still running hours after closing them.

They aren't "running". You did read the links posted right?

We actually joke that the one way to absolutely guarantee no one will read a post is to sticky it! :D

OP, great advice given, IMHO.

Perhaps we should have a sticky about this? :)

Absolutely

Good idea. This tap keeps dripping.

It wouldn't help. One thing I've noticed about forums is that, as soon as you sticky something, nobody will read it.

:p

Perhaps a Sticky with all the links from post #3? Then every once and a while someone can post in that thread the 4 most important words EVER. (just to show people the thread has been updated)

"You don't need one!" :D

Thoughts?

Short answer is no matter what holding the home key will show you last 8 apps you had open regardless if they are actually open or not. Usually if a task killer actually makes your phone run better that means you have a rogue app eating cpu/battery from not closing it properly or something like that.

I've had mixed results with task killers. On 2.2, I had a weird problem with my battery draining faster than normal. I ran a task killer and it fixed the problem. Later, on 2.3, I had some issue with an app. I decided to run the task killer. It caused some weird error messages all over the place. I then just rebooted the phone and the error messages went away.

I think that there may be some instances where a task killer might help. For the most part, task killers either don't really improve the situation or may make thinks worse. Before you resort to using a task killer, I would suggest you at least try to identify what problem you think you have first and try to find a solution, if indeed it is an issue. Android manages tasks differently than older OS's and people may be confused into thinking something is causing issues in Android when everything is normal.
