Best text app when texting iPhone

I like Android much better than iPhones, but most people I know use iPhones. I'm wondering if there is an app that will tell me when someone saw my text and is writing a text back. It would also be nice if I could download pictures and videos over wifi and not just using my data.

1) There's no "return receipt" in the SMS protocol, so there can't be an app to use it.

2) I don't know if anyone's written an app to do SMS via 2G (which is how it's done - it's like voice), then switch to wifi to download attachments.

Whatsapp is probably your best bet for cross platform text messages. Both parties need to have it installed. It uses your phone number to register then reads your contacts so you can see who else has it. It will also tell you when they last used the app.

Whatsapp will send text, picture & voice messages. It marks your messages as sent & also received but won't tell you it has been read. I'm fairly sure you can see when your recipient is composing a reply.

However, the limitation is that it needs a data connection to bring this functionality. It does not send gsm type sms messages, just instant messages via internet.

There is also google hangouts but you both need a google account.

There is no Android SMS application that will allow you to currently do this without the other person also having the application. Sorry
