Best Uses For Dual Screens?

Let's brainstorm some great ideas for using the dual screens. We've already seen browsing multi-media on bottom and seeing it on top. We've got compose message on top with keyboard on bottom.

What are your best ideas for dual screen use?
 
Any turn based RPG would work great with two screens. One screen for the map, one for the actions.

Photo-editing could actually work similar to a desktop since you can have your "pallet" options in a dedicated area separate from the work.

I call shenanigans. You just don't understand how linux, computers, and smartphones work. That's ok, you don't have to. But to lament fragmentation in android is identical to criticizing the fact we don't all buy Macbooks with identical specs.

For linux, the code structure is more or less the same for all distributions, you just have to be more aware of the requirements and if your device meets them. New features are added with updates that are not back-ported because, well, there is nothing stopping you from putting the fresh code on the old device besides the manufacturer. So if you don't have the latest feature, you can only blame yourself for not grabbing it through rooting. To complain an app runs too slow, well, that is just like a computer too. Crysis can't run on a 1998 PC period. Compared to Apple or Microsoft, which change what works with new iterations or waste massive efforts including backwards compatibility (Apple is Unix/BSD based, so this only *really* applies to the Intel transition).

So this is actually avoiding fragmentation by using the same resolution common today for each screen. So you can display two items at once as if you had two desktops or certain special apps will take advantage of this.

Choice is freedom, not fragmentation. But freedom comes with responsibility to know what you can and cannot do without hand-holding. Not suitable for all audiences.
 
Well, if you could get Aldiko developers to support it, you could read books like you would a paper book; look at the left page, then the right, then turn the page. From a practical perspective, it probably would not be an increase in utility from a large screen phone like the Evo, but it would be cool to those of us who support e-readers.

It would also be good if one screen was for the soft keyboard, and the other was for display in a host of applications that require a lot of typing (though admittedly, a dedicated keyboard would be better for this).

I like the Android platform, I really do. However, with all the different resolutions, and now screens...in addition to all the manufacturer software caveats make a very difficult platform to code for.

Application quality suffers greatly with Android. Developers have to plan for many many different variations of devices.

Regardless, I guess this thread shouldn't be about the pro's and cons on having no hardware regulations on the Android platform...however...This is a Kyocera device...if HTC can't get updates out in a timely fashion, I certainly question the ability of a popular pre-paid disposable cell phone manufacturer.

If Kyocera can't have the software optimized for the launch, it says a lot about how the device will be supported in the long run.

Dual screens is a noble thought, the execution may not be.
 
I agree with the book thing.

I'd love to be able to read my kindle on something like this

It really is cool looking phone. But i'd never go with Sprint again after my horrible evo experience(shudders from the memories lol)
 
Maybe for parents who's kids want to transition from the DS other than that I see no practical use for this in the real world for normal people.

Stop and think for one sec what developers are going to make custom software to take advantage of two screens if it only sells around 20k units?
They need to work a deal with Nintendo then they will sell millions.
 
alot of the suggestions on the main page of phandroid sound really useful though....

lol trying to curb my phone whoring ways but this device look cool :) Here is hoping the post-production models will be A LOT FASTER then it's pre-production counterpart at the event
 
I just don't see how this will be a success. I don't buy into the fragmentation issue, but which devs are really gonna work with the SDK for this one phone that probably no one will buy? It's not practical. It's attempting to fix something that wasn't broken to begin with. No one needs two screens on their phones. It adds unnecessary thickness, uneccessary battery drain, and extra development to actually use the two screens. Why buy this when on Sprint alone you can get an Evo, and Epic 4G, and various other android phones that are better and more practical? I see this being a huge, Kin-like flop.
 
Not everyone needs a keyboard on their phone(ala most droids, epic, evo shift etc, g2, etc) just like not everyone needs a FFC, a vanilla android phone, a phone with hdmi or hd recording etc etc

Not everyone needs a 4.5 inch screen device....It is all about preference
I'm sure someone needs/wants a device like this...Just like i am sure there will be developers who see this phone as a challenge to create a rom form

Developers have to do the same for thing for iDevices. 4 different phones, 4 different ipods 2 tablets, numerous iOS versions and different screen resolutions. This fragmentation argument really needs to stop it's just silly, pointless and innaccurate. By this same limited thinking developers wouldn't make PC software because that's fragmented as well. :rolleyes:

But isn't fragmentation worse on Android than IOS when you take in account all the different os 1.6, 2.0, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3 and then the screen sizes and resolutions and other things. I can see where people make this argument at.
 
I have found that when I am reading my emails, sometimes I want to call someone or use the nubmer in the email and having the ability to have the phone on one screen and the email/number on the other has been helpful. I also love reading books on my Kindle app on the Echo, the screen is so big that it makes it so easy to read!
 
I don't see what the deal is about people and the line between both screens, just get over it crap for years people been using dual LCD'S on there desktop computers and it the same line, I think its useful, but I bet if it was apple that came out with a dual screen iphone it will be a better idea then such bull crap I'm loving my echo that's all I have to say. We need new tech and challengers I dont want them to run out of ideas like the movie industry.
 
I used my Echo for watching movies all weekend. The dual screens make a big difference in the viewing experience. The split screen only took a minutes to "virtually" disappear and I didn't even notice once the movie got going. I have had it for about a week now and I am really impressed with it so far.
 
Just last night I tried watching youtube on the top screen while using the broswer on the bottom screen. It worked really well actually (on WiFi). This plus the view I get for e-mail have been my favorite so far.
 
GPS. Since I use GPS a lot on my EVO, I think it would be cool if on the top or bottom screen they had a textual description of your route, and then on the opposite screen they had the typical, live turn-by-turn directions. This way you could see both at the same time.

I must admit, this phone as grown on me.

Same here I have a Evo and I'm really loving the Echo sure there somethings that need to be worked out but it will get there with updates, the Evo has had its share of issues, I'm a sprint rep at a store and I show my Echo to all customers, like look what my phone can do lol, you should see the jaw drops when I whip out the duel screen mode. I love it :D

I really think a lot of ppl underestimated the phone and I believe it came out literally 2 weeks ago to the date today and I would love to see the sales of it

Im not expecting Evo or Droid like sales(especially not droid like since it's sprint) but i am eager to know what they sold
